Hey guys, i was wanting to get the hvx but sadly i ain't gonna be able to afford it (yet) but expect to in about 12 - 16 months, sooo

my masterplan therefore, is to get a dvx100be (im a PAL guy) and selling it in about 12 months etc.

However lol, panasonic isnt about to release some kind of dvx100c with 16:9 ratio is it lol, cos if it did id be screwed trying to sell on my dvx in 12 months time (since who'd want it over a newer 16:9 dvx) etc haha.

So-oo any news on the grapevine regarding such dangers lol

Heard a rumour on this site, but other than that ive not heard a thing.

But if you need a camcorder today buy the DVX.

If you knew you have the money in 12-16 months buy the HVX with a loan, payment plan whatever you can do.

What are you planning to shoot?

While one should never say "never", I don't really expect it to happen. It would involve engineering a new chipset, and I would expect them to introduce a new AVC-HD model before they'd spend the resources to develop a new standard-def chipset.

Might happen, but I doubt it would.

Barry I just wonder, since they have the HVX that can shoot DV 16:9 how much trouble is that to switch over to a DVX? Make a 16:9 DVX with the AVC-HD and there you go.

Ya well i'm shooting content for both clients and also for making me low budget creative epics haha, basically for dvd.

In the UK its a big difference tho cost wise, the hvx is £4000+ and the dvx is £2000 and finance options are well, u get interest free for some places for 12 months, but (id not be using the hd capacity of the hvx cos i couldnt afford p2 cards at the mo anyway).

So with its goodies the dvx is superior in my mind but im just sure that getting the money back on it, if they released a 16:9 dvx in the interrum before i sold it, would cripple the ol' dvx b value!

In this regard (in the UK) the xl2 would be better future proof wise (for just 12 - 16 monts as in getting more if it back) since there aint much sd wise that can go wrong for its value in comparison to what could for the dvx if they release a new one.

Annoying thing is, in the UK xl2's are a pain in the arse, more expensive than they should be imo, plus obviously i wanna a dvx whaaa its not fair lol :furious3:

well stores like B & H photo are out of the DVX100b anyway. I still think Panasonic should have spent the money and made a 16:9 DVX before.

Was just thinking the other day how odd it was that the revolutionary 24p cam -- marketed and sold for its film look, would be native 4:3.

Then again maybe Panny knew exactly what they were doing because I see the DVX used all the time for MTV and the Dog whisperer etc. and not the XL2.

So Jack Daniel whys MTV going with that then? Its just cropped dvx footage yeah?

You see i do try to think whether with a pal panie, im gonna lose that much in reality by squeeze etc, u know, that if the native 16:9 for the xl2 is not so important if its output is tv,

so if for example theres a big visual difference between the xl2 and panie crop, on a normal joe's widescreen tv.

I reckon it is but only to a limited extent, what id really appreciate is if anyone has a link to some uncompressed pannie pal footage, (so i could experiment with that with some xl2 footage)

No it's 4:3.
Same with Dog whisperer (I think that's 4:3 not sure) But they use it to get down on the floor with the dogs and stuff.
I saw an MTV crew walking out of a Voodoo store in New Orleans with a DVX and a Century wide angle adaptor (it's very cramped in that store) a few months ago. It felt good to see a broadcast crew with the exact same camera AND century adaptor that I have.

well this is a huge discussion to get into and there are hundreds of threads discussing this.

The math says you are taking a 35% loss. 500 lines of resolution to 300 - 350 depending on your method of cropping and blowing up.

But people do amazing looking work with in camera squeeze, blowing up in post via NLE's with better scaling (like FCP) and especially with the process intensive photozoom pro. And now there's instant HD. I can't tell any difference in this and FCP's scaling, but again, FCP has one of the better scaling algorythms. You can also shoot with the anamorphic adaptor and get full 500 lines widescreen but that can be a major pain.

I think you are right and I think the Squeezed and Uprezzed footage is still higher resolution than most TV's can display without twitter (in the US, don'y know bout over there)

but ... its somewhat subjective and somewhat not ... I'd use the search feature for more detailed info.

also, since there have been a number of server upgrades, it sometimes helps to search in Google rather than the DVXuser internal search feature, as Google will pull up old DVGXuser pages that the new search feature on our new server won't sometimes.
