DVX 12Bit image processing?

Just wondering if anyone can clear this up, and perhaps what it all means... Seen a posting somewhere that stated the DVX is superior to the XL2 in terms of its 12 BIT proccessing vs the XL2 at 8 BIT.
Isnt this the other way around?
Supposedly a famous DOP who spoke to Jan Crittendon about the shortcomings of the XL2 and its claims, specifically in 16X9 mode. He said the DVX had 12bit processing....
Also - I just shot a some stuff for a Doc. using the 16X9 strech mode...
Any opinions on this VS. letterboxing in Post?
In FCPHD I render with sequence at Higher Quality YUV
and also apply a 4:1:1 smoothing filter.
Thanks for any replies.

Re: DVX 12Bit image processing?

The DVX100 used a 10-bit DSP, the DVX100A uses 12-bit.

Early speculation was that the XL2 used 8-bit, but Canon has since confirmed that it also uses 12-bit.

Re: DVX 12Bit image processing?

Both the XL2 and DVX process at 12bits.

What it means is that the signal from the cameras CCDs is being processed at 12 bit accuracy. 12 bit processing is pretty good. The more accurate the processing, the better the image will turn out with regard to color.

Re: DVX 12Bit image processing?

We got into this on the other thread as well, but just to be accurate from the engineering perspective -> The # of bits specified doesn't really tell you much since there are two hardware blocks under consideration - the DSP and the ADC (analog to digital converter.)  For example, you could have a 10bit ADC with a 16bit DSP, or a 12bit ADC with an 8bit DSP, etc...  The most important number is how many bits the ADC is (with respect to quality and assuming that the DSP doesn't throw any bits away.)  I doubt though, that the DVX or the XL2 specify anywhere the difference between the two, or get into the whole myriad of processing techniques used.  So there is really little to discuss without a whole slew of specs and an engineering degree :P .  In the long run - its just an advertising gimmick.
