I have a question. I shot a wedding last friday and the audio was set to standard on my dvx. the levels were peaking in the red and i thaught taht was going to distort my audio. so i put it down on the camera from the level controls so that it does not peak in the red. but then when i braught it back to the studio, the parts that were peaking in the red (which the settings were on the middile from the level controls) came out normal, but when its not peaking in the red it very low audio. should it peak in the red or not peak. please help.

Yes it should go a few dots into the red. The transition from white to red happens at -12dB, well below any danger of peaking. You could set your normal audio levels for as many as three dots in the red, that would give you conversational audio around -6dB if you like it that hot. Just make sure that it doesn't absolutely max out -- all six dots of red, and the little "bar" at the end of the graph showing up. THAT's peaking, and that will distort.

On the HVX200 they did away with the red except for absolute peak, which I think is probably a better solution; the DVX has confused people because it shows red when the audio is still perfectly clean. You've got up to six dots of red, so use 'em; just don't let it slam into the wall at the far right of the meter.

thank you Barry, so is there someting in the menu to set that or just the manual setting from the level controls.

Turn the ALC "on" to get some protection against distortion, and then just adjust your audio level potentiometers until you get a reading you're satisfied with.
