My final destination its 35mm film or dvd. I have read around here that DVX100B doesnt give a good 16:9. What to do to attenuate this problem?

Cinemania is runnin' wild!

I dunno much... but...

If u get Instant HD (which should come with the rebate) I hear ya can transfer to 16:9 wide screen... Or you can also use photozoom...

Theres also an anamaphoric adaptor thats like $700 or so...

Or you can do a 4:3 letterbox crop to 16:9...

The choice is yours... I'm not qualified to recommend anything for that since I never tried any of it...

Good luck, good sir!

Where have you read that?

it's true that its squeeze mode doesn't have quite the resolution as native 16:9 CCDs would give, but it's only slightly less -- DV is pretty low-resolution, anyway.

Technically, you'll get the best resolution using the anamorphic adaptor. My hunch is that if you can afford a filmout, you can afford the anamorhphic adaptor. If you're going for a filmout, you're probably familiar with traditional film processes and won't mind the additional effort involved in operating the adaptor.

However, the 16:9 SQUEEZE mode isn't that bad. I'm using it all the time now, and I'm very pleased.

what? i thought after hundreds of discussions on this topic we had all agreed that squess mode chopped of the same rez as shooting letterbox. is the 100b different?

It has the same viewing area as LETTERBOX mode, but the quality is generally better than upscaling in post.

I have proposed that in the NTSC version of the camera, there may actually be improved resolution over LETTERBOX. It seems the NTSC and PAL version both have 410,000 pixel CCD's. This CCD footprint gives you all the resolution you need for a full 720x576 PAL image, and it's more resolution than necessary for NTSC. In SQUEEZE mode, cropping and zooming, theoretically the camera could have up to 430 lines of vertical resolution, not the 360 you'd get from an NTSC crop-and-zoom.

This assumes that Panny implemented the right path of signal processing, and that the crop-and-zoom is done early in the signal processing, not after the image has been scaled down to NTSC. Based on my viewing, this is about right. I'd be interested if there is any information to prove otherwise.

Also bear in mind that due to the decreased vertical resolution, it is acceptable to shoot in THIN mode when using SQUEEZE and you still won't get interlace flickering on fine details. It is possible that NORMAL/THICK and SQUEEZE/THIN have about the same resolution.

I know people get freaked out by crop-and-zoom, and the camera does not have a true 16:9 CCD, but all factors combined it seems like a perfectly acceptable solution if you can't afford/bother with the anamorphic adaptor.

is this just for the 100b or also my 100a?

If this is the case, it would be the case for both the A and B models. I'd be interested in hearing some of the moderators thoughts on my theory.

So if i wanto to have a decent short-movie that could look filmish when printed in 35mm format (or Dvd) and shooted in 16:9 i need an anamorphic adaptor. Which one can you suggest me? I can spend for it about 1.500,00 $.

if you have the possibility for a 35mm blowup, then you'd probably be better off with an HVX simply for resolution.

Can i put on a either DVX or HVX both the elements (anamorphic adap. and 35mm lens). Or are they the same thing? Sorry but i'm a begginer and i'm a bit confused :) If there are some FAQ i would like tho read them.

thanks all

You didn't mention before you wanted to use a 35mm DOF adaptor. That changes things a bit.

For the DVX, you would skip the Pana anamorphic and hook up the 35mm adaptor and use 35mm anamorphic lenses, which could be expensive or hard to come by.

For the HVX, it natively shoots 16:9, so you just connect the 35mm adaptor and you are set. No anamorphic anything required.
