DVX-100a Tape format

I am really pushing to get the DVX-100a, but the man who signs the checks isn't buying my recommendation because he sees the word "MiniDV" attached ot it. He is pushing for the Sony PD-170 because "it's a DVCam". He seems to think that the Panny is a consumer toy because it's MiniDV.
Can someone set me straight here...the AG-DVX 100a isn't a MiniDV in the sense of the consumer cams you get at Best Buy...but I need to explain the format. I'll admit, I'm just getting weened away from the BetaSP world so these terms are still somewhat new (DV, DVCam, MiniDV, DVC Pro 50, DV 25, DVC Pro 25) Is the Panny a DVCam?

Re: DVX-100a Tape format

MiniDV and DVCam are the same format and use the same tapes. DVCam runs the tape through the camera faster (it's supposed to help eliminate dropouts) but that is the only difference. The quality is the same. The DVX can shoot regular 60i video (just like the PD-170). Where the DVX blows the PD-170 out of the water is when you switch to progressive mode. ;)

Re: DVX-100a Tape format

DVX is simply THE choice camera of the indie film makers for the last 2 years. While cannon intorduced their XL2 few months back, DVX still is more handy.

Frankly it is a fully professional camera in a 'prosumer' (prof- consumer) outfit. Most DVX users have found this to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

DVX and PD 170 P are prosumer cameras, they have the same quality in interlaced mode but in progresive mode... DVX is the best choice.
