DVX 100A 24p to DVD Recorder

I would like to capture my DVX100A footage (including 24p) not only to tape but also to a disk at the same time the video is shot, and then use the disk version for import into Vegas to eliminate the need to capture from the tape.

Can I do this with an inexpensive DVD recorder that one would use to capture TV programs, etc. I do not want to lose any quality so I assume that the DVD recorder would have to capture in AVI format.

Is this reasonable? If so, are there any special features I would need, and do you have any recommendations for a reliable but inexpensive DVD recorder?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Can't do it.

DVD recorders record in MPEG-2, not DV, and at 29.97 with no possibility of pulldown flags. So, not only will you have highly-compressed footage which doesn't record every frame, you won't be able to edit in 24p.

What you most likely want to do instead is live capture in Vegas; or better yet, use DV Rack (now Adobe OnLocation), though I believe it's now only available in Adobe CS3.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have DV Rack but it's on my laptop which isn't powerful enough to capture the live video without crashing.

Are there any other options? If I have to get a new laptop can you recommend the minimum configuration. I was looking at the Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7454 with this configuration:

Windows Vista® Home Premium (32-bit),AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology,TL-58,1.90GHz,HyperTransport™ Technology @ up to 800MHz,2048MB,PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM.

Does that sound like it might be in the ball park as far as live video capture performance goes?

Thanks, again.

I'd guess you have different problems with the laptop; pretty much anything made in the last 7 years should have no problem capturing DV.

That computer would be fine.

I use Focus Enhancement FS-4... is that what your looking for? I can live capture for nearly 3 hours straight with the 40 gig unit. Its basically an external hard drive to the camera.
