DVI to HDMI for using an HD monitor with FCP

I found myself with an "extra" 27" LCD HD TV after buying a new one this weekend so I decided to try to put it to good use. The HDTV has a res of 1280 x 760.

I bought a good DVI to HDMI cable for $75.00 and connected the monitor to my Quad G5 so I could use it as a Digital Cinema Desktop monitor for editing in Final Cut. I used bars and a 47B filter to calibrate it and I must say the HVX footage looks great both directly from the camera via composite cable and from FCP via DVI / HDMI.

My question is how accurate can this be for color? I was able to get as good a calibration as possible with this setup and everything looks good. Colors are more saturated and blacks are deeper when compared side by side with my Apple flat panel as is to be expected. A computer monitor should look a bit washed out compared to a real production monitor, right?

My aim for doing this is to be able to do some reasonable color correction on my home system which would allow me to work the odd hours I have been keeping lately wothout trecking in to my office.

I forgot to mention that I did an initial calibration on my Mac using the Graytag Macbeth "screen sucker" calibrator to create a profile specific to the HD monitor. This made the HD TV look very close to a computer monitor which is not what I should be shooting for. So I switched to the Bars method of calibration.

Anyone have any thoughts about using this kind of setup? I know it is not ideal but for a total cost of about $1100 instead of $3000 plus for the Panasonic 17" will it get me in the ball park for color?
