DVExpo East 2004

Hi guys I just wanted to drop an line about the DVExpo East which I just got back from. Like Speezy http://www.dvxuser.com/cgi-bin/DVX2/YaBB.pl?board=XL2;action=display;num=1089848336 I got a chance to see the new XL2 and tease the Canon reps that I was a former XL1 owner who switched to the DVX for the added features at a fraction of the form factor - they smiled and took it in stride... every camera has its benefits keep in mind.

Aside from that I just wanted to confirm the existance of the [glow=red,2,300]NEW [/glow]Century Optics mattebox for the DVX100/A which the rep there said was just officially announced recently - claiming that it would hit the website very soon and also that most of the reps at NAB were unaware of its existance (go figure) but i did get to see it and check it out hands on. The rep showed me the pricetag for the package (we'll see if the price holds true when its released to the mass public) which rings in at about $1500 including the box, flag, 2 tray loaded filter stages (1 fixed/1 rotating - however not much more than 180+ degrees which I found odd), and adapter ring for the clamp on version only. They have a rod support system but i dont believe that was in the "package" that he showed me in his printed price/inventory sheet. I noticed that the sides of the box had indent marks which the rep pointed out would be drilled to allow for side barn flags at a $200-$300 pricetag for the pair. Also he mentioned that the follow focus system may be in development in the future as they had a Chroziel focus drive on the display model. Claiming no vignetting at full wide!!!

I also passed by Bogen and checked out the Formatt mattebox which is a very lightweight all aluminum box which requires very delicate handling (even carbon fiber boxes like the Century Optics boxes - hell for $1500 you might as well treat it like gold). They were using the standard 72mm adapter for the DVX100A and i could see what Jared pointed out with regards to the physical interference with the onboard mic. When asked about vignetting if using an additional 72mm lens to extend past the mic, I just got a shrug from the salesman - I will be heading back tomorrow and friday to hopefully speak with them in a bit more detail. I mentioned DVXUser.com and the salesman (Marc) mentioned that he knew about us and it kinda sounded like he was aware that Jared was the one testing out the units?!?

Anyway pretty much it was a good show - I think there were a few more vendors this year then last but I could be wrong.

Please post back if you had a chance to go and if you want leave your opinions... Sorry for the spelling errors its been a long rainy day in New York.

Re: DVExpo East 2004

CO's rep mentioned that their anamorphic adapter is going into the 3rd prototype in the next few weeks. It should price out at arounf the mid 2k range. The XL2 looks nice but costs too much and if you really look close the resolution is down from our rig. IMO, if you really want to swap lenses go use a Pro50 camera.

Re: DVExpo East 2004

Just got back from NY.

I was there mostly for HOPE5 (2600 hacker conference), but I stoped in at DVexpo East. Here's some stuff I noticed:

Tried out the DVC30. The "30p" mode, with the cinegamma settings seemed even nicer than I remember the XL1s moviemode, or whatever it was called, to be. (grammar bad, me tired.)

The DVC30 is really fun as far as size and weight go. This would be amazing for times when you're not able to/not allowed to bring a real camera. This would make you look more "consumer" and less of a target for things like security guards, police batons, over-curious office workers, etc.

Basically, Canon now has a DVX100a. If you like their form-factor, which I find uncomfortable, and not close enough to a real shoulder-mount camera, you can get this cam, and shoot movies that look pretty much the same as the stuff coming out of a DVX. I'd ask you to consider getting a DVX and a DVrigPro though, which would give you a much MUCH steadier shot, and still save you a thousand bucks or so.

I asked the guy at the Canon display to explain the benefits of the XL2 over the DVX, and he listed a bunch of things that the DVX already has. I don't know who's giving these talking points to the reps, but they seem to assume that people at a VIDEO EXPO know nothing about VIDEO. oh well.

first benefit named was:
"we don't use gimmicky names for 24 modes, like 24p and 24pA, we call it the real thing, 2:3 and 2:3:3:2"

is that really worth mentioning?

Re: DVExpo East 2004

also, isn't "frame moviemode" or whatever they called it on the XL1 a bit gimmicky? just sayin'...

Re: DVExpo East 2004

..he may as well have said "well we call ours "canon", and not somthing stupid like "panasonic"..."

(like homer simpsons joke about the differnce between white people and black people.."white people have names like lenny, and black people having names like carl..."

how can he call it gimmicky.. panasonic invented the mode didnt they.. imho they can call it whatever they want.
