DVDSP buttons - alpha channels?

I'm trying to use a picture of a person as a button for a DVDSP project. It has alpha channel info, but when I import it, it carries a white channel behind it. Why is that? It looks terrible like this, and I won't accept that's all I can do. I'm still pretty green in DVDSP.

That explains it all ... Wow. Great job, Apple. Way to suck all the fun out of a program. This looks like quite the PITA.
