DVD / Superdrive Backup speed?

How long would it take to backup P2 files to a DVD using a new G4 laptop? The current burn-speed for a DVD is 8x, correct? Are there faster DVD burners out there besides the Superdrive?

It will take something like 8 minutes per 4 GB if you use 8x discs.
However, your mileage may vary according to the specs of the disc
you pop in. Not all discs are equal, so the burner checks each disc
and varies the speed accordingly.

To test simply make a DVDProHD file of 4 GB and burn a test DVD.

Yes there are faster burners out there. I think the fastest has a max
speed of 16x. But beware, this does not mean the time to burn 4 GB
will be half of that of an 8x burner. In fact the speed gain is only
something between 20 and 30% compared to an 8x burner.
And there is no 16x burner available that would fit into your PBG4,
all 16x burners only fit into big PCs.

A good source for burners for a PBG4 is www.mcetech.com

Unfortunately, the new MacBook Pro only has a 4x DVD write speed. They had to downgrade the drive to fit the slimmer size. I'm sure they'll upgrade them in future revisions.

Maximum Write: 4x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW

I've just ordered from MacMall two new/old PowerBook G4 - PowerPC G4's with 1.67GHz and 15.2" Widescreen Notebooks to use as the controlling computer for recording to external Raid hard drives for the two HVX's I'm getting for my film. Each Laptop comes with an 8X speed super drive. I plan on shooting most of the movie to the hard drives but I'll have two 4gig P-2 cards for any mobile shots. Though I plan on downloading any P-2 files to the hard drives ASAP, I'll also have a new/old G5 Quad with 2.5 gig processors and 4.5 gigs of ram and FCP studio and a 16X speed super drive to edit with. About how long would it take to copy a 4gig P-2 to DVD at 8X and 16X speed, and is this a good way to back up the movie footage in general? I know it will take a lot of discs to do that, but it seems a pretty good way to quickly back up my shots and I'll have three computers to do it with. Thoughts?
