DVD Studio Pro - exporting in 16:9

hum ... i'm having a little issue here ... maybe someone can help me ...

I have build my project in 16:9 but the only export i can get is a 4:3 export that cuts left and right pretty much like pan-scan; cutting all the menus and footage from my 16:9 to 4:3, that's ugly!

I checked in the Settings and it says everywhere 16:9 except ... what bothers me in the General Pane where the "SD DVD Menus, Tracks and slideshows" says 19:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox or Just pan-scan or just letterbox or 4:3 ....

I'm just wondering why i can't have just 16:9 ... my footage being in 16:9 why should it be letterboxed or pan-scan ?
if you have any hint ...
Also, when i click on a template, it resizes my menu screen to 4:3! Those templates have no 16:9 versions? Then i have to re-select the 16:9 and in the simulator everything is ok. Still, when i export, it cuts left and right.

help! :undecided

When you say you get a 4x3 after exporting from DVD Studio Pro, are you saying that you author a disc and then play it back and it only plays back at 4x3? Then I ask, are you 100% sure your TV/DVD/etc are all properly setup (menu settings) for 16:9 playback?

I've never had any problems. I make my timeline 16x9, I use the 16x9 preset in compressor, and then everything is happy in DVD Studio Pro. So just out of curiousity, what camera did you shoot with, what settings in FCP did you use, and how did you export/create your MPEG-2 file (Quicktime Conversion, Compressor, DVDSP's internal encoder)?

cheers.

ok, thanks for both of you for trying to help me ... here's an update after a few tests:

actually, the bizare thing is that when i watch the exported DVD on a MAc (or on a PC) it displays the menus in 4:3 (although in DVD studio pro it's in 16:9) so it's cutting my menus .... and the movie is then shown in 16:9 (even though some pixels are still missing but maybe the safe area or something, i don't know ... now on my DVD player, it's all in 4:3 ... menus and movie.

and yes, my TV and my DVD player are very used to display everthing i watch, every DVD i own in 16:9 ....

What I was outputting out of DVD Studio was ... a DVD ... directly burned from DVD Studio ... i mean.
Now because you asked, i tried outputting a Video TS file out of DVD studio pro and burning it with Toast. (strange workflow) but it worked much better, becuase now only my menus are cut and my movie is shown is almost 16:9 on my DVD/TV. With again some pixels missing left and right but nothing dramatic.

btw, i'm in Europe, so it's a PAL system we're talking about.

Any hint on having my menus shown in 16:9 as well? :-)
Any hint on having all exported directly without going through Toast? (although at least it lets you test for real what you burn, which is not that bad after all ... )
Why are some pixels missing from my movie?

Regards,
katja

sorry i forgot to answer some questions :

my cam: DVX100B
in FCP: 25 fps (i'm in PAL)
out of final cut i used quicktime conversion (i forgot to mention that the .mov file is perfect, 16:9 all great)

kat

>how did you export/create your MPEG-2 file (Quicktime Conversion, Compressor, DVDSP's internal encoder)?

hum .. i guess that's the DVD SP internal encoder because i set the 16:9 setting in the MPEG2 config panel.

I'm a fan of using Toast for burning my stuff. Mainly because we always get asked days later for "extra" copies of stuff. So that way, as part of my workflow, I always have the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders kicking around on the server. Also, had a few times where the DVDSP burn died part way through and then had to redo things (Mac freeze). But had a lot better luck just using Build button and then Toast. Might have been due to an underpowered Mac in the past, but am just in the habit now.

Quite peculiar that your menus are having problems like that. If you click on the menu icon and set it 16x9 it should be 16x9. If you used a template that was meant for 4x3 and changed it, it should still do it (stuff might just look stretched is all).

Going out of Final Cut Pro I would recommend using File > Export > Using Compressor. It will give you more control and better quality in the end. But that just impacts your movie file, it won't really solve the menu trimming. Never heard of anything like that.

cheers.

hum ... here 2 screenshots of what i see and what i don't see ... behing the yellow *vertical* lines, it gets cut ... let and right ... that's so bizare, i don't understand it, really ... i will try with my friends DVD player, maybe it's a compatibility issue... but my commercial DVD that i bought work just fine, so frankly i'm confused....

If its getting cut in top image where you show the yellow lines, that's called the Action Safe. Action Safe/Title Safe exist for that very purpose. Even though you digitally author that full image, once it hits various playback devices you might lose framing because of action safe/title safe.

You can probably google around for a better definition of that though. Or just wait a few more ticks as someone else on the board will hopefully chime in on that regard.

cheers.

Hey,

I am having a problem with DVD Studio Pro as well. I get ugly and huge artifacts! What should my settings in DVD Studio Pro be?

I shot with the Panasonic DVX100 (original). I shot in 16:9 Letterbox mode.
