dvd resolution

ok, one more newbie question:

looking at a freshly burnt dvd, and the footage doesn't look good at all. very low resolution. are we talking changing output settings or getting an HVX???
 
not sure, since the difference in size is considerable. hooking the camera directly to the tv produces similar results. looks pretty bad compared to even standard definition.
 
maybe it's your footage. dvd's usually don't look quite as good as the dvx straight to the tv because of the compression on the dvd but if your direct footage looks bad then something's wrong. did you shoot with the gain switch on med or high? that will always make it look bad.
