Which format is the best between DVD-R and DVD+R ?

...and which one is the most "universal" ?

thanks

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

-R is a more "open" format and is most often found in professional machines. In addition, more 3rd party DVDs can read -R. +R by some is considered technically a little more advance and responds better to session burns. Both are set to be surpassed by new technology in the next few years.

If I was a professional, I would probably choose -R. If I was a home user, I might be inclined to go with +R. But it is almost 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Professional NLE are almost always equipped with -R burners.

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

new standalone players play both. an old Playstation 2 and older standalone playwers need -R.
so i would go for a burner that does -R (or both).
if you only use the DVDs in a controlled environement (your own machines and they can read both) or do a lot of DVD-ROMs, then use DVD+R

I disagree. Don't know about the PS2, but I have a player from 98 and a player from 2000, and they both play DVD+R and DVD+RW at the same compatibility rate as -R(W).

Truthfully, it's pretty much a non-issue. Both formats have a 90%+ compatibility these days.

merci les gars !

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

DVD-R used to be the initial standard and lots of early designs were done just before Philips and others came out with DVD+R. Several things happened ...the old designs were sold, manufacturers not caring about licences and patent rights, brought out "universal" (+R/-R) ones. Nowadays most licence stuff has been arranged and many brands sell dual systems. Some specific brands (mostly from the -R camp )system don't bring out the dual systems on purpose in order to try to "win" the battle..and get the license money (like Panasonic and others).

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

DVD-R was developed as part of the DVD standard. Standards (live DV) are always better to follow if possible simply because I hate it when companies try to corral me into a proprietary corner. DVD+R was designed outside of the DVD standard (DVD-RAM was not).

All companies play this game when they feel threatened by standards. Microsoft was threatened by MPEG-4 so they added MPEG-4 to their WMP and tweeked it to make it "nonstandard." So an MPEG-4 encoded on a Windows machine for a year was not able to be read by anything which could read MPEG-4.

My recent experience was first with DVD+. It would not play on anyones dvd player except computers. I just went with DVD- and it plays every where. Good luck.

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

:) I just bought a dual-layer DVD writer, so I'm totally screwed. Maybe. We'll see.

The machine it's in isn't completely built yet. But I've promised myself that this one will be a strictly video machine. The last one somehow managed to get everything but the kitchen sink loaded onto it.

Re: DVD-R  or  DVD+R ?

in that case GenJerDan , I have the solution -  put the kitchen sink in this new one then you'll be complete !!  :D

- what's the spec ?  -  I'm about ready to replace my 1900XP Athlon ( only 1.6GHz )

- You bought a dual-layer dvd you say ? - I was looking at them this week , but thought I'd give em a couple of months more to avoid early glitches , I'm sure there'll be plenty - hope yours will be ok !
