DVD played on a blue-ray player

I burning a DVD-R 4.78GB disc that will be played on a blue-ray player.
Does this allow me to create an mpeg 2 with a higher bit rate?

I know it's not recommended to push the bit rate past 7.0, but if it will be played on a blue-ray player I wondered if it would be acceptable.

My compressor settings:
Video- CBR bit rate 8.4
Audio - ac3 192kbps

I would test it, but I don't own the blue-ray player. I'm showing up with my DVD and hoping it plays fine. Any other suggestions regarding the quality of a SD DVD on a blue ray player is appreciated.
Thanks!

In theory: Yes

In practice: Possibly

Officially: No

The DVD spec, according to Wiki, has the following limitations:

DVD-Video discs have a raw bitrate of 11.08 Mbit/s, with a 1.0 Mbit/s overhead, leaving a payload bitrate of 10.08 Mbit/s. Of this, up to 3.36 Mbit/s can be used for subtitles and a maximum of 9.80 Mbit/s can be split amongst audio and video. In the case of multiple angles the data is stored interleaved, and so there's a bitrate penalty leading to a max bitrate of 8 Mbit/s per angle to compensate for additional seek time. This limit is not cumulative, so each additional angle can still have up to 8 Mbit/s of bitrate available.

The issue is, many modern players (not even Blu-ray) can play higher bitrate discs, simply because they are capable of doing so due to faster drives, processors, etc, BUT some players also artificially limit their capabilities, simply to stay "in-spec", so it's not a guarantee. This is also notable with MPEG-2 support for 2.21:1 anamorphic video; some players will actually play it, while others won't, because it's MPEG-2 spec, but not DVD spec.

BD players are of course several orders of magnitude more powerful than DVD players, and they are often more flexible in the formats they play, but it's also not a guarantee. I wouldn't exceed 9Mbits in any case.

Beth,
For better compatibility, try to keep your CBR under 8. In Vegas, I encode the MPEG at 7.5 CBR or, if using VBR: Max=7,712,000 Average=6,168,000 Minimum=3,696,000. I got these numbers from this board some time ago, and they work well. My DVDs play on every player I have tried (maybe 4-5 different brands). Encoding at rates over 8mbs can cause problems on some players.
Hope this helps
Ken
