Hi, I have to convert some DVDs so that i can edit them in FCP. What is the best software to use for the mac? Is there any free alternatives?

Can i use compressor to do the job?

What is the best format to convert into?

Best regards
Daniel

I use MPEG StreamClip. Its free and you can convert those dvd files to any format, given you have the plugin for that format.

If you have FCS installed on your computer you should have the right codecs to convert the raw files from the DVD through MPEG Streamclip to QuickTime files.

If you have Apple Care, this is what they'll tell you to do.

It works pretty easy when it works.

(To me, Final Cut Studio isn't a one-stop professional package if you need freeware to make back track the normal workflow.)

(I had trouble w/ my MBP a few months ago & took it back to Apple, ran Time Machine when I got it back & I thought everything was fine. Somehow I lost the some of the codecs so I had to re-install some of FCS to make the process work.)

1. Given the fact that ripping DVDs to edit previously m2v encoded footage isn't a professional workflow, I don't think your criticism holds.

2. Professional applications install of variety of packages upon install. Using a migration assistant or Time machine backup to install FCS2 isn't a best practices.

best
