DVD compression question

Hi Michael...I had this in the "other software" section but no one answered, and you have really helped me with compression in the past so here goes...

Hey everybody...I am have a real problem here with encore ver 1.0. I cut in avid xpress 4.6, compress to mpeg2 in sorenson 4.0 and from my understanding, it should not need to be compressed anymore because it is a DVD ready mpeg2 format, as specified in sorenson. For some reason, when I put it into encore DVD it wants to compress it again, I cannot burn a disc without doing that first. And the thing that really sucks about it is that encore compression SUCKS...it leaves all sorts of audio pops and sporatic freeze frames. I mean its "watchable" but come on. Has anyone ran into this and can you help me out. THanks!!

Re: DVD compression question

Maybe you want to try the following option:

On the mpeg2 file right mouse button> transcode settings> don't transcode.

Re: DVD compression question

it wont let me choose that...under transcode options it is shaded so I cant click on it.

Re: DVD compression question

Can you just give it a QUickTime reference movie to author with and then let it transcode? This way it only trancodes once and not twice causing the compression artifacts you are seeing.

Another thing to look at is whether you are giving the application elementary streams or transport streams (audio and video as two files or both as one). Perhaps the application makes assumoptions when picture and sound are one file.

Re: DVD compression question

I tried the elementary streams but the audio ended up being a few frames longer than the video, I am going to give that a try again though because I nver actually burned the DVD that time, i just saw the extra time and dumped it. In general, for PC, is encore not really the way to go? Could you recommend something that will accept sorenson compression to go straight to disc, but also have the ease of menu design like encore??

Re: DVD compression question

I tried the elementary streams...worked great...but the thing that made encore accept the sorenson compression as DVD ready was when I changed the video from square pixels to 4:3....i am an idiot...this whole time it wasnt acceptiing it because it was in square pixel format. well i certainly hope this helps someone else who may be looking at this thread.
