DVD burning flaky after DVDA 4.0b upgrade

Pardon the lengthy post, but...
As the title says:
I have Vegas 4.0e and Vegas 7d on my machine. Never had a problem burning SD DVDs from DVDA 1.0d. My Memorex DVD recorder has always worked perfectly, giving me a choice of burning speeds (I usually record video at no more than 1/2 the maximum burn rate).

I loaded in 7.0d not long ago, with DVDA 4.0b.
Finished a music vid SD project (DVX 100A 30p) in Vegas 4...didn't want to change to 7 midstream).
I used the separate MPEG2 and AC3 video and audio stream template as always, prepared the file for burning in DVDA1. Prior to the burn, I made sure that both the MPEG and .VOB files worked in MS media Player. So far, all was well.
When I attempted to burn the file from DVDA 1, my burn speeds were suddenly limited to 2.4x or 16x, as opposed to all the speed choices I had previously. OK, I thought, I'll just burn the compilation from the prepared folder with NERO 6. NO GO! NERO says that the "file allocation failed". Something I'd never seen before.
I knew the file was good, because it played in 2 versions of Media Player.
SO:
I opened the file in DVDA 4.0b and prepared it to a different folder, burned it and checked the DVD. Seemed OK, so I burned another. Second one was a coaster...0 bytes burned, 0 bytes left, even after DVDA told me the burn was successful!

Long story even longer: 5 of ten DVDs were bad...a couple played once on my computer (after waiting a long while for them to be recognized by MS Player), but not on my 2 DVD test players.???

What's happening here?
An uninstall and re-install of DVDA 4.0b didn't help.
Could the 2 versions of DVDA be conflicting? Is there a file I need to move between them? Should I lose NERO?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I've been using Vegas for 7-8 years without many7 problems, but this one has me stumped.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Ken

It could be a dying/dead dvd-r drive. Could also be media that your drive doesn't like or isn't compatible with, but that's a problem that's more unlikely these days.

qazwsx,
Thanks for your suggestions.
Media type has never been an issue for the last several years with this burner. No problems until I installed Vegas 7.0d and DVDA 4.0b.
No other software, demos or otherwise has been installed recently. I run a pretty clean XP SP2 system. I suspect that some conflicting element (.dll,etc.) has been installed in the wrong place, or has over written something it shouldn't have. Supposedly rare with Vegas, but now, I'm not so sure.
Thanks again,
Ken
