Gary_McClurg - Sounds like your friend was trying to print on the "thermal" printables... which will not work in the Epson R200/300.
As far as ink running on the Espon R200/300 printable discs, yes it's posible. The ink is water soluble and will smear if wet. Some people use krylon spray and lay down a thin coat to prevent this. I've been meaning to test this out and will report back once I do.

I dont know, to me this Lightscribe seems like a step in a much better direction then ink printing labels onto a disc.
I would much rather have a professional silk screen-looking label (even in one color) than one any kid could print up and stick on their MP3 compilation cd.
And there's no ink!

I bought the R200 from epson because it was on sale. I picked up a spool of pro disc 4x silver tops, they said inkjet printable.. tried printing 3 disc all of them were terrible, and none of them seemed to dry, I think I had them out for like 10 hours and they were still wet. the manual said up to 24hours to dry, So I returned it to the store. I think now it may have been the discs and ones with a white surface may print better. But I didn't want to blow the cash on something that didn't perform. could anyone take a picture of one of there printed discs with a good picture or graphic and post it? Thanks

Watch it, though -- they'll still smudge for about an hour or so.

They're about the same as an HP tricolor and a black combined.
