When importing DVCproHD files from the hvx into avid is there any quality loss whatsoever when it is converted to the Avid file format? Is there any recompression at all?
Additional, the same question when capturing directly into avid.
When importing the MXF files from the HVX camera, you are working with the native files as shot, no recompression or transcocde unless you request it to do so (such as to DNxHD).
If bringing in analog video via component (uncompressed) as capturing it as DV25, DV50, etc, there is a compression step.
MXF and OMF are metadata wrappers around a codec (such as DV, DVCPRO) and HD in Avid is only supported as MXF. But that has no bearing on the quality.
Transcoding to DNxHD does not reduce the quality of the image and was designed to actually maintain the original quality of the image in a post process where you might be going through multiple renders for color correction or effects work. HDCAM and DVCPRO 100 codecs do not sustain the quality as well over multiple generations.
You need to look at your overall workflow to determining whether a transcode is needed or not.
