DVCproHD-DVCpro50-DVCpro25

That's a question I don't know the answer to. I'm not going to say there isn't an answer, becuase I don't know. Perhaps there is a reason and I just don't know what it is. Or perhaps it's just marketing. But as far as I know, in NTSC, the only difference you would expect from DVCPRO25 vs. DV is that DVCPRO25 dictates "locked audio", whereas consumer DV doesn't -- consumer DV uses "unlocked" audio. However, the DVX and the JVC "Professional DV" line both use locked audio anyway, and I would expect the HVX to also use locked audio. So, theoretically, there is no difference (that I can think of) between P2 NTSC DV and P2 NTSC DVCPRO25. But maybe there's something else that I just don't know or can't think of, etc...

DVCPROHD-1080/60i: 1280x1080, approx 6.7:1 compression, 4:2:2 color, 3.33 megabits per frame
One thing I don't quite yet understand is how the 1080 mode of DVCPRO-HD only records 1280 horizontal lines. If the "standard" HDTV signal is 1920x1080, and the CCD is only recording 2/3 of the horizontal space, where is the rest of the picture coming from? Is it a sort of "squeezed" method like the DVX uses to employ 16:9 output?

Just to confuse you, DVCPROHD actually records the data at lower resolution as a form of compression, it is then uprezzed on playback.
Why would they record the data at a lower rate and then uprez it? Wouldn't it retain a lot more quality if they recorded it at full resolution and then compressed it after the fact?

Same as it does from any type of HD recording. There isn't an HD recording format out there that records 1920x1080 (well, maybe HDCAM SR, but that's it, and it's not widely used). HDCAM and HDV both record 1440x1080, DVCPRO-HD records 1280x1080. All these systems use some sort of scaling to up-rez the image to 1920 on playback.

Sure it would -- but there isn't any full-resolution HD codec in common use; it's just too much data and too much bandwidth. The only mode of HD that gets recorded at the full resolution is D-5 HD, at 1280x720. HDV 720p also records 1280x720 in luma, but even then, it's at only 1/4 of the chroma resolution.

Barry, do you know if DVCPRO HD is 1280x1080 in PAL? Also is there any word on the chip resolution of the HVX? Sorry for the hi-jack...

I am not sure of the PAL resolution. I tried to figure it out using the Avid codec and got conflicting results.

As for chip resolution, no word. I think we'll see actual resolution charts before we hear specs on the chip. As long as the charts hold up, I wouldn't care if the chip was 8000x6000 or 80x60, just "show me the magic"... :)

I am not really bothered about size either... lol, that sounds a bit dodgy... but I would be interested to see what they choose.
