DVCPRO50 to miniDV

Is there a specific reason that the HVX can't dub DVCPRO50 footage from the P2 card to tape? Why is HD the only footage that can be downcoverted?

I'm talking the about the in camera dub mode. It's only valid for things that were recorded in 720 and 1080... not using the firewire port.

I think it's the data rate. Firewire can't handle a DVCPro50 stream.
I'm not sure I understand what that means - I capture DVCPro50 via firewire to my MacBook Pro all the time.

Correct, DVCPro50 is only 50Mbps, and the Firewire version used by the HVX goes up to 400Mbps.

The manual is pretty confusing about saying that P2 footage can be dubbed to tape. And then it says "only 720 and 1080" ... meaning that 480 can't be dubbed to tape in camera. If you want to shoot in DVCPro50 and down-convert to DV, you have to do it in your editor rather than in your camera.

right... i'm just wondering if there's any rationale behind it. jan? barry? anybody on the inside have any idea if this is something that might be possible to remedy in a firmware update?

I certainly don't know of any reason why it wasn't added. Doesn't mean that there's no reason, only that I've never heard of one and can't think of one... I'll try to remember to ask 'em here at NAB.

Keep in mind there's a new firmware upgrade coming next month. We have no clue what features it may include, other than that it gives support for the 16GB cards. But maybe we'll get some new/fixed/updated features too?

how easy is it to dub 720pn footage (shot at variable frame-rates) to minidv in camera from p2?

and what kind of results do you get?

thanks barry.

magic - that function is pretty straightforward. the manual or barry's book will explain how to do it in just a few simple steps. the results i've gotten have always been great to miniDV. i've passed plenty of dubs on to clients and have never received any feedback otherwise.

cheers

do you get better colour going from live > 4:2:2 > 4:2:0/4:1:1 (via dub)
than live > 4:2:1/4:1:1?

or are they exactly the same?
