DVCPro

I'm new to HD, so this might be really hard to answer, or really easy, but how long does everyone think the HVX will be in its prime, before it becomes obsolete. This was kinda opened and addressed at the top of this thread, will it be a long long time before a new HD format/codec comes around?

Also can someone educate me on how long DVCPRO HD has been around?

DVCPRO-HD was first announced around 1998/1999, sometime around then. I believe the VariCam was first produced in 2001.

As for how long the HVX will be "around"; well, predicting the future of technology is always extremely difficult. I can say that the DVX has been around for three years and is still at the top of its game. The VX2000/PD150 came out around six years ago, and only really faded away about a year or two ago. But as they say in mutual funds, "past performance is no guarantee of future results".

I guess Pany would be planning a replacement in around 3-5 years wouldn't they. But lets see the HVX actually get into production first!

It is interesting to specualte on whether P2 and DVCPROHD will catch on. Personally I would prefer to see a non-linear format that I can shoot AND archive onto, but as hard drive capacities continue to increase, this becomes less of an issue.

DVCPROHD seems to have a bit of a niche at the moment, sitting between HDV and HDCAM. Personally I would like to see (as I keep going on about) a 40-50 Mbit/s interframe HD compression with 4:2:2, that could have a lot of potential.

Im happy with DVCpro's 50Mbps non-interframe 4:2:2 HD compression, because it makes editing a whole lot easier.

I think DVCpro HD will be around for along time.... its a pretty new standard and I would imagine will be around till at least 2015 if the P2 format takes off.

The good thing about Panasonic moving towards P2 though is that it eliminates the codec restrictions of a tape drive.. they could switch to DVCproHD2 down the road, and still use the same P2 cards people have lying around, there is no need for a whole new tape stock, new decks etc. Depending on the forward codecs, it would even be possible to upgrade codecs in previous cameras with a firmware upgrade.

That would be cool... upgradable codecs! However, I would guess that future codecs will be very processor intensive, and will need some serious computing power to encode them.
