DVCPRO Protection Strategies?

Hi there:

I'm really looking forward to the release of the HVX200!

Now that I'm starting to gear up, I'm surprised to learn that the Axio card and the hard drive is going to cost more than the danged camera!

So far I'm looking at the Huge Systems and Medea arrays that can sustain more than a 200Gig bit rate. I'm assuming that's what I need.

The lower priced 4TB arrays are about $10K and up and are RAID 0. To me, that means that you are storing all your precious footage on a hard drive system that will go completely dead if one of the drives fail. RAID 3 would be a solution worth looking into, and I will be.

Here's my question: Can I purchase a tape deck that records DVCPRO and DVCPRO 50 and take the footage right off the hard drive for protection's sake? If it is possible, I would consider rending a deck for a day to copy footage that I can't replace.

Sorry for the long-winded post. I'd love to hear some suggestions!

Thanks,

MIKE

200 gig bitrate?

DVCPRO-HD is a 100-megabit data stream. 12.5 megabytes per second. It's not extraordinarily taxing, you can probably get a couple of streams realtime off of a regular SATA hard disk.

DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO-HD decks are readily available for rent, yes. A DVCPRO50 deck costs about $7,000 and a DVCPRO-HD deck costs around $25,000.

12,5 MB per sec is less than what the old DigisuiteLE needed (about 15MB).
so with a modern SATA RAID-3 (or even RAID 5) you can build 1Terabite cheap and be save.

the then rent a DVCProHD deck every month to empte the drives. should work fine.
