DVCPRO HD in palmcorders

You guys are underestimating the Evil Empire. Sony will sell one hell of a lot of cams before the other companies even get their sweat pants off.

It does feel like these cams came too early, I wonder if Sony is counting on fighting the hvx200 for the digital filmmaker crowd with some kind of mini uber cam.

and that's all I was really trying to assert, glad to see I'm not the only one who saw the peculiarity in this announcment. I mean, who can say that when they first stumbled across this bit of information that they weren't somewhat caught off guard. It begs the question of those individuals with their sights currently set on an HVX if they can really wait while resisting the temptation, it certainly serves its purpose in creating a diversion...hmmmm...wonder why they would do that?

Sony producing HDV camcorders to consumers is "bad" news for Panasonic. HDV will do to the video world what DV did to it 9 years ago - "quality, affordable solution for all".
In the name of business, Panasonic will have to join the others producing HDV video cameras, and sooner will be better for them.

Absolutely, DV is also a format used by professionals and consumers. HDV can go the same way. Add good manual sound/image, add good editing solutions, add a good lens and handling etc. and there you are. You cant say that bringing HDV to consumers grades down the format. BTW Apple already showed off the consumer side of HDV with its 'fun experience 'editing solution.

Just $2.000 for this miracle small Sony. Is always nice to make some extra shots.

Perhaps our consumer company might, but I believe they have already moved on the MPEG4. We shall see.

Best,

I don't think so. Panasonic is obviously more focused on the *PRO* market. But even Jan said that Panasonic *MIGHT*.......*MIGHT* release an HDV camera later. We'll start to see things fall into place after the HVX is released. I would imagine a VariCam update is not too far off. 1080p at variable frame rates anyone?

Pro v. Consumer

Pro v. Consumer

I think the gap between Pro and Consumer has gotten to close for comfort. Everyone with a cam from Walmart thinks they can shoot films. DVCPro should stay just that Pro. The gap between Pro and Consumer needs to be further apart.[font=&quot]

Well then that's fine. I'll tell you what. I fully encourage every one who thinks that HDV is so wonderful to go out and invest in it. When the HVX comes out, I will happily compete with all the people out there NOT shooting 24p, NOT having film look and all kinds of gamma curves, and I will enjoy being able to move my camera without artifacts popping up and revealing that 25mbps compression for a High Def image is just about the worst idea ever. Then I will smile to myself when I think of the 4:2:2 chroma, and enjoy the spoils of NOT being the guy who jumps on every new technology band waggon that comes along from Sony. As soon as professsionals can shoot DVCPro HD at such a low cost, there will be absolutely no reason to use HDV for professional applications. Then HDV will sink down into the abyss as the consumer format that it is. Peace.

So you wanna say what? I stated that DV (like HDV) has consumer as professional users. And that the consumer use of the format does not mean that it bites the pro's use. Sure, a non-compressed signal will be better than a JVC 19 mb/s ! signal. But I have seen some Z1 material, finished, that looks pretty good. I think you can match it up with this littlle Sony. Don't now the USA market but the professional EU market is full of Digi Beta, Beta SP, Beta SX a.o Sony equipment.
I haven't seen the HVX, do you?

I also do not say xx is good and yy is not. I talked about how today consumer equipment (DV and PD150 /DVX etc) is available to you all. You can shoot for broadcasting or resell the material. Like the DV shock 9 years ago. Before, only pro-equipment (and pro-people) were capable doing that. Although, I sold TV material shot on Sony U-matic en BVU...Remember? The analog 1-inch C days?
Still some D1 briefcase cassettes standing in the closet. And a M-II tape...
Happiness.

Ah yes... but in the meanwhile, why not buy an entire HD camera for the price of a P2 card???

Yes, undoubtedly DVCPROHD as a format is DEFINITELY better than HDV, but shooting down HDV's capabilities at this point seem rather unfair. Just as in DV, there will eventually be workarounds on its limitations as long as there is continued vested interest in using the format.

If you're still shooting with a cam with 1/3 chips, it's still probably "pro-sumer", even with dvcpro. 2/3 chips give people what they are trying to pull out of 1/3 chips.

I imagine that the HVX will somewhat resemble crisp Z1 footage, except that you could uprez or blow HVX footage up with much less loss of information.

HDV is a good solution for those that don't want to blow up their footage to projectable size, and that's most people.

Now, come on . . .

The difference between this palmcorder and the HVX (and the Z1 and HD100, for that matter) is akin to the difference between the DVX and a ZR70. In other words, they're not in the same class, and aren't intended to be. The DVX100 will probably produce a better image than this camera, HD or no. It's just physics.

David, it's not JUST physics.

It's economics, too.

When is Panny gonna stop "doing a Bush" and adjust their pricing to reflect where the rest of the world (ie. Sony) is taking HD?

thanks!

dann,

i have to wonder then, why would you want a panasonic camera if you're pleased with the direction the rest of the world is taking? what is it about panasonic that you like? is it the 24p? is it the variable framerates? is it the high bandwidth, comparatively low compression? is it the IT workflow? or what? isn't the world all about options? panasonic chose not to go hdv for reasons you're probably well aware. i'm just curious to see inside the mind of someone who wishes panasonic were hdv.. then what advantage could they offer above a sony camera? i'd like to hear your thoughts. thanks!
