DVCPRO HD good enough?

wonky

I have seen a few articles recently that have interested me and would like to share.
I am interested in the HVX as it captures 4:2:2 colour unlinke the hdv cameras kicking around at the moment. My question is this, is it an idea to convert to 100 or 75% photojpeg or leave it in its natural codec for editing? This article raises the question why we dont just use photo jpeg for everything as it says it is a 4:4:4 codec. Is this true?
Excuse my ignorance if this is bull. I have just purchased a shiney new blackmagic HDPRO card and thought its codec would be a superior way of working.

Another nugget which caught my eye was this madness....upgrade your sd camera to hd 4:4:4....a bit geek tec, but wow

The performance of the HVX is currently in the realm of speculation as it has yet to be released. That said, I can attest to what I have seen from the camera based upon my limited time with the pre production proto at Resfest LA.

The performance differences between the HVX and the DVX/Andromeda combination are something that I am certain that many will be interested to see, but neither has been released in its final form, so until then...

The DVX/Andromeda does indeed look tasty, and the results would indeed be interesting to see. However think also on the fact that the lens elements in the HVX are designed to resolve HD - whereas the DVX is and was an SD cam with an SD lens... whilst I'm sure the lenses in the DVX10** are of excellent quality - one would sure hope that the HVX would resolve better at the same HD res - 720P I guess from the specs of the DVX/Andromeda....

Anyway - we'll have to wait and see.... Image quality is the key...

Cheers, Nathan.

The only advantage when upscalling 4:2:2: to 4:4:4 is when you apply effects to you clips. Although you will not achieve better results (or more latitude) with standard untouched clips, you may experience certain nuances while, say, color correcting. But is it worth it? Not too sure! Your file sizes get bigger, and you need more computing power to process the data.

In the case of the Andromeda, as I've seen so far from beta tests, I'd happily work more slowly, and dish-out the cash for more hard drive space for TRUE 4:4:4. But Andromeda is not useful, or should I say practical, when shooting stuff like events.
