DVCPro HD format clarification

Hiya,

We are currently using a pair of HVX201's, and trying to optimise our workflow for the setup we have, which is capture's to machines running OnLocation.

It appears that when the camera's are set to 1080 or 720 modes they only output via their firewire, a DVCProHD stream, and this is saved to T2 avi format at about 15meg/second by OnLocation.

However, I am hearing conflicting information that the HVX201 can output to HDV at 1080 or 720. Is it possible to save to HDV or anything?

It seems like it's just 1080/720 in DVCProHD, and then 576 in DV, DVCPro and DVCPro50, with tape only allowing 576 in DV?

I have read the manual almost pretty much cover to cover and it doesn't seem to clarify the modes very well and how to access them and when they are or are not available using different medias (firewire out > capture, p2, tape etc)

Wish I just had some P2 cards now then it'd all be MXF anyway :)

Thanks for any help

Dave

I had some major trouble after shooting a whole day with the HVX into OL.

1. Always get a red render line when import in CS3 not mater what settings
2. Many of the clips where corrupt and I ended up converting them in Cineform.

I think OL is not ready yet for DVCproHD.

In the moment I use a firestore (till Cineform relases it´s recorder)

I have no idea what OnLine is, but if you open the capture window of the DVCPRO HD compatible software, like FCP, Avid, Edius, or Adobe, you can do a capture now in their native file format that is supported by these. It won't be an MXF file, but at least it should record it.

Best,

Jan -

I think Postmaster is referring to Adobe OnLocation, the old Serious Magic DVRack HD. I use DVRack HD on all my studio shoots for the built-in scopes and as backup to the P2 in camera. I output 1080 or 720 as DVCProHD through the firewire port to my laptop (an HP9060 with Dual Hard Drives). Works great for me. I pull the AVI's straight out of the ejected clips folder into a Vegas timeliine. You cannot play those AVI's in Windows Media Player. You would have to encode them from your NLE to wmv or suitable format.

One issue for Postmaster may be that he needs to set clip properties for it to play properly in CS3.

Postmaster- is there a DVCPro decoder you are trying to run it through before dropping in CS3 timeline? The Serious Magic program had that, but only used for encoding mxf files to play in an NLE. The AVI's should drop right in (though you might have problems in After Effects - not sure - I use Boris FX Red and they work fine). I do seem to remember a bug in the old decoder program on its first release that had the red line problem, but that was years ago now and way before Adobe bought the program. It was fixed with a software upgrade.
