DVCPRO 50 question

I don't think I've ever seen DVCPRO50 footage... can anyone please post a link to some examples? I'm curious to see the difference with standard DV... I'm planning on getting the HPX17O, most of my paid jobs are on standard def though (I own a DVX100b, still a magnificent camera!) so I thought DVCPRO50 could be a nice step up (am I right here?) for those little jobs... shanxs a lot dvx gurus...

All I can offer is a web compressed clip of my Demo Reel that contains DVC PRO 50 footage.

It's the second movie in the reel, of Knights, Monks, Lyches and all sorts of D&D Fantasy crap.

I shot it like 5 years ago on the SDX-900. Most of the other stuff on my Reel is Varricam, HDX-900 and HVX-200,... all HD.

Biggest diffrerences I noticed going from DV to DVC Pro 50 on the SDX-900 was the amount of color information. You had a lot more to work with on color and levels. The SDX-900 also had a larger CCD chip, so I got a much shallower DoF.

Sorry it's been 5+ years and I don't have the time to go digging for footage.

If no-one else steps up to the plate in the next few days I'll get digging.

Hope that helps,

- Greg

DVCPRO50 is GREAT.

It looks crisper, and more vivid. Just imagine DVfootage+. Thats the best way to describe it...

I've shot 99% 720p since I got my HVX. Shot one DVCpro50 (4x3) commercial
for broadcast. I was very impressed, the colors (especially reds) really popped and it looked a bit sharper .

sounds good... and what about delivery... would regular DVDs work? sorry if it is stupid question...

I've got a project I'm finishing tonight that was shot 90% DVCPro50 and 10% MiniDV on a GL2 and a HVX200. The temp clip I sent to the VO guy is here:

But, it's difficult to see the difference once the files are compressed, since the sweet 4:2:2 color space of DVCPro50 is lost with almost any compression for the web. The biggest benefit of shooting at a higher quality than you output is that you have wiggle room with either resolution, color, or both.

Basically, if you're just going straight to DVD without color, keying, or other effects, MiniDV and DVCPro50 will end up looking very close.

One cool thing with jumping from tape to P2 is a better time lapse option. Interval recording to MiniDV doesn't usually let you write one frame at a time. The video has timelapse done both on the HVX200 and the GL2, and I bet you can tell the difference (although both have been sped up from their original captures).

Plus, it would have taken me an extra two hours to log and transfer the footage if it was all on tape!

Thanks for the link man... looks pretty good to me... Is it me or it looks sharper than SD (minidv)? is that an attribute of DVCPRO50 or HVX?
