I'm not quite shure, but is it right that you can write P2-dvcpro50 (or even HD) material to minidv on the camera.
If so, will the quality be better than SD. I'm asking this because if this is true, I want to know if this downconverting practually is the same result as HDV.
Maybe this is the biggest bullshit question asked lately, but I couldn't find anything on this so far.

Thanks

The quality of downconverting will not be any better than recording DV from the onset.
In fact, from Barry's initial tests it seems that the quality will be slightly worse than shooting DV from the beginning. When downconverting in the camera, you're compressing the signal once into the original codec (say 720P DVCProHD), then recompressing it into the DV codec.

To be clear - when you dub the footage to DV tape, you are recording DV onto the tape - not HD, and not DVCPro50. You wind up with a DV version of your original footage.

If you do indeedw want to downconvert to DV, you will probably get better and cleaner results by downconverting in post, through FCP or AE, or whatever your program of choice is.

By the way, I'm uncertain whether or not you can dump DVCPro50 footage to DV in the camera. Even if you could, you wouldn't gain much of anything from doing it.

To clarify by the way, DVCPro50 is an SD codec.
So your questions about whether or not it woudl be better than SD doesn't really make much sense - but I assume you meant would it be better than shooting DV.

DVCPro50 has twice the datarate of DV (50mb/s vs. 25mb/s)
It also records twice the color information (4:2:2 vs. 4:1:1)

But the frame size of the two codecs is the same (720 by 480)

No, you can only dub HD to DV, it doesn't have provision for dubbing DV50 to DV.
