DVCPro 50 and Mac AXP...

Wanted to see if anyone has tried to ingest DVCPro 50 from P2 cards and used in a Mac 4.8 system (not a PC system). Is this possible (yes, slightly confused). DVCPro 50 does not have the MXF wrapper does it? And do we think this could be run w/o drop outs and a G4 PB with a G-Raid fw 800 drive?

Any thoughts would be great!

Thanks,
FD

Thanks Barry.

I assume that is the same for HD options and direct to computer recordings? Or will it record as DVCPro 50 other than P2 (or devices that act like P2).

Sorry if I am getting confused. I have figured this is going to be my workflow - 4 Gig P2 cards - xtransfer to Powerbook w/external drive - Backup 4 gig data to 4.7 gig dvd for storage.

Sound fine? Maybe make the switch to FCP after NAB (if of course it continus to grow in features and AXP continues to lag in MAC support).

Comments?

No, direct-to-computer will be done however the computer you're using decides it should be done. For example, the Mac will almost certainly record a Quicktime file direct to computer. Not sure about Avid or Canopus; I'm pretty sure Canopus uses Type II AVI's, don't they?

But Avid likes MXF, so it's possible they store the files as MXF.

What the camera streams is no file format at all; it's a video stream, so it's up to the computer to determine what type of file format to store.

Your proposed workflow would work fine.

Thanks Barry. I guess I need to confirm (ie. people using it) that MAC Avid Xpress Pro 4.8 will ingest from p2 with the mxf wrapper and use it that way or is there a need to have it become something else?

Maybe too early in the game. Just want to use the HVX shooting DVCPro 50 w/p2 cards and edit on a MAC AXP system.

Maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe that Xpress Pro on Mac supports MXF at all (I don't work in MXF--yet--so that's why I'm a little cloudy on the topic). This support will probably come mid-year with Avid releases Xpress Pro HD for the Mac.

You are correct, The Mac based product does not support MXF wrapped media, nor DV50 or DVCPRO until mid-year when the Mac parity version releases.
