DVCAM vs HVX

I'm not sure where to post this...
Who is still using cams like the Sony DSR-450 or even the JVC-5100? Is that style of cam still relevant in the market considering the trend toward HD? Maybe a better way to phrase the question would be if there are shooters who prefer a traditional pro camera in DV over the HD handicams like the HVX? And of course those larger cams are 60i only.

My market seems headed towards small corporate projects. I could care less about the professional look. Content is king. I presently have a dvx-100a

Good place to ask...in the hvx forum

Thanks for your input

But your clients might!

I own a DSR450, JVC HD111 and an XHA1. The DSR is my favorite camera and still makes the best images IMO. The JVC is great and I like the "lightweight pro" form factor. The Canon is okay if you need to use a small handheld for something. The DSR450 does do progressive BTW.

I still haven't delivered anything in HD yet despite having the capability for over 2 years. Clients either want DVDs (which look pretty good anyway) or web video, in which case it is often scaled below SD resolution.

Ask yourself what you NEED not what you WANT. That way, you'll save a lot of money!

Thanks mmm

Thus far, when asked about HD, I ask the customer why they need it and how they would deliver it. And they say "I dunno".

After telling them that they new disc players are not mainstream, and TV is more or less a non-issue, and the production cost would be higher, they say SD sound ok to us.

I like the idea of the larger form factor manual cams such as the dsr. I think more important than HD is 16x9.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

You could get a second hand DSR450. That way it will loose less value too. You might get one off someone who is going HD complete with a decent lens. The 450 is lighter, uses less power (I think), shots progressive and looks better than the 500/570.

The JVC is a good option too and still looks "pro." I miss it sometimes...when lugging the DSR around. Apart from in low light, the picture quality is very comparable - although I dislike the lack of DOF control with 1/3" chips.

A friend of mine has the JVC-5100 and likes it very much for what it is. It does have 1/2" chips, 3xlr inputs, and a swapable firestore drive that mounts between the battery and the cam...very cool. 60i and 4x3 though.
