DV Rack

I've never used DV Rack... but have a HVX200... how does the software work? Do you need a firewire input on your laptop? Can you use USB or anything else? Does the video show live from the camera on the laptop?

Thanks
David

It works only with a Firewire connection, not USB. It shows almost live on the laptop, there is a slight delay. If you use it with an HDV camera, the delay is about 1/2 second, it's a bit less with DV, DVCPro50, and DVCProHD as these are intraframe codecs.

Be aware that DV Rack doesn't exist anymore. Adobe purchased Serious Magic and has renamed DV Rack to OnLocation, and it is now only available as part of a bundle with a bunch of other Adobe software in the CS3 suites.

Hello THoff What a shame . I remember several of us were beta tester for DVRack and tested the HD HVX200 capture.

Merle Travis wrote a song "16 Tons. the last verse ended. " I owe my soul to the company store"

He hated the song but loved it when Tennesee Earnie Ford recorded the song and it sold several million copies

Yeah, I hate Adobe with a passion.

They assimilated another fine company and its products that I was very fond of: Pixmantec and their RawShooter Premium digital photo developer. The program was replaced with Adobe Lightroom, and while Lightroom is nice and more feature-packed than RawShooter, it is sometimes incredibly unintuitive and frustrating. For instance, the Lightroom designers came up with their own item selection scheme that doesn't follow standard UI conventions, their own copy-and-paste etc.

Lightroom is also a total dog performance-wise, even with the V1.1 upgrade. In RawShooter, I could add RAW images to the development queue with a single key, in Lightroom you have to wade through menus and dialogs, and if you want to develop more than one version of an image (to create an HDR image, or a color version plus a B&W version), you have to resolve the resulting output name conflict manually every time. Got four processors in your system and a ton of images to develop? Tough, Lightroom only uses one CPU.

i have adobe onlocation that came wih the cs3 bundle, but my PC laptop only has a usb connection. is there some kind of connection out there that is maybe firewire on one end and usb on the other? will that work? or do i have to buy an entire new laptop with a firewire port???

There is no such thing. You'll need a PCMCIA/PCCard or ExpressCard addon card that adds one or more Firewire ports -- check what type of slot your laptop has.
