DV Rack Waveform Monitor Setting

Does anyone use DV Rack? I have a question on using it.

How to you set the Waveform Monitor up so the scale & position is correctly set.

I could set up my DVX and set the Zebra to 100 % and using my lights on a dimmer to set it off. Then I'd adjust the Wave form monitor 100% setting to the camera.

This seems a little backwards. Any ideas?

Re: DV Rack Waveform Monitor Setting

Why not contact Serious Magic directly about this, they're very helpfull?

Re: DV Rack Waveform Monitor Setting

I have contacted them but I felt their answer wasn't an answer, if that makes any sense. They simply didn't instruct me how to use these functions on the monitor.

But I'll take your advice & I'll try again, thanks!

Re: DV Rack Waveform Monitor Setting

I just got a good answer back from them! :)

FYI:

For those of you wondering what DV Rack is: it's a software application that lets one capture DV directly to a laptop bypassing tape, and it gives you a calibrated monitor with vector & waveform scopes for setting exposure. Once shots are captured, it's ready for editing, color correction, etc. All in one place, the laptop!

A few other goodies come with it also, all in all, it's a nice tool considering these tools usually cost tons of money, but not anymore!

You could send a message to members Mark Randall or the_other_mark. These Serious Magic guys are very helpful.

Re: DV Rack Waveform Monitor Setting

You want to set up a waveform and vectorscope to the bars coming out of your source, not to a picture. Turn on the bars on your camera and set the waveform to plateau at 100 IRE and bottom out at 0 IRE.

Then set the Vectorscope so that the "points" of the scope reading fall inside the target boxes.

Turn the bars off and you have your scopes now calibrated to the output of your camera.

With your scopes calibrated, you will be able to see when your red chroma is over and where your white and black points are.

J Barnes:

So the camera bars are more accurate than the DV Rack bars because it represents the source signal?

Yes, that's how your camera thinks the colors are, and therefor what you should adjust your scopes at. After all if you are putting bars to tape that's the bars you will refer to when using the material. The built-in color bars are easier to use for calibrating the monitor though.
