DV rack and Avid

Hi
Anyone had use dv rack and then edit with avid?
I mean, not just using dv rack to monitor the shooting but for recording to the hard disk and then import it to avid.

I was doing some test and can´t import any file from Dv rack to avid. No matter what codec i choose couldn´t import anything.

Not sure i am gonna use it for that purpose in the future, but i wanna know whats wrong. if it´s normal or an avid´s problem. (i am using 4.5)

And another question: In What case would have more quality? capturing over dv rack or just capturing over the ordinary capture tool in avid

Thanks

Re: DV rack and Avid

I would just record directly into the Avid when on set. DV Rack makes Quicktime and AVI which need to be imported into the Avid - this a decompress and recompress into the Avid DV codec. QUaity aside, the time factor alone is an issue as well as the loss of timecode if you ever need to recapture.

Re: DV rack and Avid

Thanks
I guess i could use dv rack to monitoring and then get the avid capture aplication.
Just curius Is it better (quality talkin) to capture straight to the avid than to the tape and then capture it? Is there a noticiable diference?
I am gonna have a shooting next week at my house so I could use the Pc for monitoring and capturing directly to avid without using tapes.
For one side i wanna have the tape for back up but if the image suffers from the tape-pc trip I would choose going to pc straight.
What do you think?
Thanks again

Re: DV rack and Avid

There are no differences in quality when capturing from tape or directly from camera. In both cases, the digital buts are just being transported via FireWire. The only difference would be no tape drop-outs on the direct capture since there is no tape, but if there was a hard drive problem you would lose the take all together.

Wisdom would dictate direct to disk recording with a tape backup (do both) or just tape if you needed camera mobility.
