DV Monitor

hmmm. a fair upgrade policy. well, considering the current price, i'll take your word for it. :)

i really liked the gui. the other version had more bells and whistles (waveform/vectorscope/etc), but dv monitor has what i need. i definitely appreciate the rule of thirds, tv safe, etc features, and the calibration was a snap to use.

i thought everything was laid out in a manner that it was easy to find everything.

i do have one question though. i tried to run the pro version without my dvx hooked in and to just use my isight camera, but i didn't find the option to set the camera. will it only work with a firewire camera? as soon as i figure that out i'm looking forward to trying out the recording functionality. very cool

DV Monitor Pro is not using the Quicktime API like DV Monitor is. We switched to a low level driver which improves performance and allows us to do more things. A side effect is that we only see Firewire based cameras and the iSight is not one.

We should have Scopes soon, we showed them running at the HVX camp during the summer in NY. Of course we have come a loooong way since that demo.

Please do hook up your DVX to see how cool and efficient it is to shoot with DV Monitor Pro.

Ben

ahhhhh. it all comes together. i'll definitely hook up the dvx. by the way, can you get the hd going soon? i think it's the kick in the butt i need to buy an hvx. :)

by the way bena, sounds like you have some really cool and competitive features coming up. i'm definitely going to be making my dv monitor pro purchase in the near future.

I see the system requirements for the pro version are G4 1.2GHZ or higher. Does this mean I can't run it with my G4 1ghz titanium? I will test the demo later on when I'm home where my powerbook is, but was wondering if you had any specific insight on this. This app would be absolutely perfect for an upcoming project I have.

Hi Ming,

You can use it on your 1ghz PB, I have the same computer here. The issue is the video chip is not Core Image capable, so if you turn on any feature that uses core image, your Frame rate will drop significantly. The upside is it will record clips fine.

You can use the exposure zebras while setting up the shot, then turn them off for the shot.

So the answer is it does work, but you should try it out to see if it works for you.

As long as I'll be able to record to HD and play back clips on the laptop in QT. I would also hope I'd have no issues recording to external FW volumes?

I'll be shooting competitions in which judges may need to review footage pretty much johnny on the spot, and they'd need a monitor (laptop) rather than the tiny camera LCD for it to be practical.

Great product, Ben. I downloaded the demo (DV Monitor Pro) last night, tried it out this morning and bought it. I'm looking forward to the Scopes upgrade.

When recording 24PA is there a better way to remove the pulldown than using Cinema Tools? If not, it's no big deal as Cinema Tools did a good job and didn't take that long...just wondering.

Glad you like it.

Currently cinema tools is the way to do it. That request is on the list.

Hi Mike,

But is it reasonable to go head to head with a much bigger company that already owns the Windows market?

I think so. I'd buy it in a second if the price were more reasonable than DV Rack. And I'm only interested in the DV Monitor, not the direct to disk recording. DV Rack only has the one, rather expensive bundle. I'd love a cheaper PC monitor-only version.

Okay, Ben didn't ask for this but I feel the need to crow a little about his exciting piece of software. DV Monitor Pro, specifically. This is worth the price of admission if all you use it for is to record direct to disk. And if you're in a controlled environment with power, you can tell it to record to an external hard disk, otherwise, record to your laptop's HD. If that was all there is to it, it's well worth the $199.99. Compare that price to my nNovia Quickcapture for $1100. Okay, if you want to run and gun, you'll need the Quickcapture if you're trying to go tapeless. But I still record onto tape as a backup with it because it occasionally "misfires." No such problems with the DV Monitor Pro. You see what you've got immediately. And if you're recording 24PA, a quick pass through the Reverse Telecine on Cinema Tools and you're good to go.

If you're using a Mac and you're shooting where you can attach a laptop via firewire to your DVX, this program cannot be beat. I wish I had this when we shot Hollywood Gothic. Did I mention that you can name your clips prior to shooting. None of this crazy naming system like you see with the nNovia or Still Cameras.

Bravo, Ben, bravo...and thanks for giving us a really useful app.

If any of you missed it, we are going to be asking for Beta testers with HVX's ( hint hint).

I will post a link here when we are ready.

Heya Ben, that's awesome.

What's the upgrade to DVMP? Went to the site and didn't see anything to indicate a either an update patch or newer version. BTW, I finally caved and bought my license earlier this week and I'm liking the product.

Another question, is it normal to have a red render bar when importing QT clips directly into FCP? I can play the unrendered clips in RT on the FCP timeline (29.97 seq), but yet there must be something slightly off.

Hi Ming,

Just download DV Monitor Pro, it will be Version 1.1.

The audio issue you ran into has been fixed in v1.1 In a nutshell, we were recording the DV Stream from the camera with the audio and Video muxed. FCP did not like this. So in V 1.1 we now demux the audio, which also allows us to add Audio VU meters and Live play through listening... pretty important features :')

The update is free and adds other important features like the ability to start and stop recording from the camera and other goodies.

For all you guys using Macs, you really need to look into tapeless recording with DV Monitor Pro. This is such a great product, I cannot believe that more people haven't discovered it yet!! If you're recording narative stories, where you're not run and gun, you really need to consider this... Imagine, tapeless recording.....

I first looked into this after seeing khmuse record with DV Rack on a PC. I wasn't willing to switch to PC, but then I didn't have to once I discovered what Ben had created. I haven't looked back. It has an added feature for those using 35mm adapters. It will do the flip for you so you don't need to modify your camera.
