Let me start with the photos:

What the HMC80 offers over the HMC40:

(1) Larger body.

(2) Shoulder rest.

(3) Higher resolution LCD, almost HD.

(4) Easy access to controls, rather than through menus.

(5) SD Recording Mode.

(6) XLR Built into the camera.

Why should you get an HMC40, rather than an HMC80:

(1) Smaller size.

(2) Lighter weight.

(3) It costs less.

(4) Currently easier to obtain.

I'm going back tomorrow, Thursday, to shoot some video, I will post it here...

Hi Dan,

Assuming that Panasonic does release a "a" version, maybe that will come in about 2 to 3 years.

:)

I now have HMC80 envy....

as i understand, the only differences between this camera and the HMC-40 is the amount of manual controls with buttons on the body, right?
same sensor, same low light problems?

Same sensor, same low light sensitivity. Much bigger body, lots more manual controls, more connectivity (XLR audio, BNC video, etc) and the addition of the DV recording format, and the elimination of the touchscreen.

According to one of the design engineers at NAB, the lens and the image sensor is the same. However, the camera on the outside is different. As a shoulder mount, one could put a large Anton/Bauer battery on the back and it would act as a counter balance to the camera.
