Dump the tape transport

With all the yammin and yalloran over the fact that a $2000 P2 card will only hold X minutes of X, perhaps we can kill two birds with one stone.

Let's tell Panasonic, now that we are still effectively six months away from a production model, that we want them to drop the price along with the tape drive.

Face it, everybody who has got a hang up with P2 should either upgrade to DVX or keep shooting with DVX. HVX is a different animal altogether. In fact, we got what we asked for and then some. And guess what? It's less expensive than an SDX, but more expensive than DVX. Ain't capitalism cool?

I think so, that's why I'll be first in line, even if I have to pay for a tape transfer I'll never use.

[font=&quot]I for one dont mind the tape drive infact I wish the HVX200 had a tape drive that shot on the big 124 min MQ tapes. I love the idea of P2 but Im willing to shoot on tape until the P2 card can hold atleast an hour.

It's way too late to make major changes like "dump the tape drive". They have to have the product on the shelves by December.

Yeah....maybe if we ask nice. And if that doesn't work we'll stomp our feet and bang the floor!! That should definitely get that *darned ol'* tape drive GONE!!

Seriously though.....it's too late for radical changes like that man. Let's just roll with it and be glad we are getting a great product that shoots muliformats!!

sorry to be analitical , but i dont get it ..i mean its almost the equivilent of me saying that every time i get on a cruise ship.. i ask them to "dump the lifeboats" . cause i dont want to use them.. and we likely wont use it.. so i think it must a good thing to get rid of them. .. or asking a store to take out the 25 tools in the "125 tools" toolkit that i buy cause i dont like those tools.

point is..its not like its in the way or prohibits you from doing anything and its not like its making the camera cost more or its presence is making the camera worse or keeping it from doing anything else it does.. so why ask a company to get rid of something valuable and use just cause you personally dont intend to use it?.. for that matter they might as well get rid of the AWB and gain and focus assist in 24p and all the other things that i wouldnt personally use.. but i would never ask them to do that.. theres a time and place where just about anything can be handy and useful.

One really cool reason to have it is for folks who want a native 16:9 DV camera from Panasonic.
So--longer zoom range, no more anamorphic adapter, and the ability to record 60p and downconvert to tape for true in-camera slow motion footage in SD.. Great little cam even if you don't require HD.

"Dump the lifeboats." LOL!!

Isn't that what they did on the maiden voyage of the Titanic?

I doubt throwing the tape transport overboard would result in a much lower pricetag anyway. How much are entry-level consumer miniDV cams now? $300-400? Don't they use the same type of recording heads/transports as a DVX (albeit perhaps a bit higher in quality)?

So an HVX200 with miniDV transport = $5995 MSRP
HVX200 without miniDV = $5695

Big whoopie. For tossing out the incredible ease of popping in a tape and rolling standard DV whenever you might need it, saving $300 is no bargain.

..i think the mini DV transport costs well under 100.00. the price point of the HVX would probably stay exactly the same.. which is a big reason of why they added the transport.. caus its not really like its costing them any real money to do it. and alot of peop e will use it and be glad its there.

Yeah, I don’t really get it. Most people use maybe a tenth of what Microsoft Word or Excel can do, yet there is no call to eliminate the rest of the functionality. I have 8 USB 2.0 ports on my latptop; I can’t imagine a situation where I’d run out of them, but I’m still not interested in plugging any of them up. It’s not like they added more than five bucks to the price.

And in those two examples, you’re talking about things which will be used far less often than the Mini-DV drive on the HVX.

As it has already been pointed out it's way too late for that kind of change, but to be fair [and to add to the mental masterbation] it's probably not so much an issue of costs as it might be what better functionality could be added to the camera with the extra real estate gained from removinf the tape drive.

I don't know what that would be and I agree with thisiswells that there is actually quite an advantage to keeping it.

Panasonic was smart for putting in the DV tape drive. Now people who want a smooth transition into HD from DV can. Its all about giving the end user options. If you don't want to use it, simply don't. But when that day comes when you want to shoot to tape (like live event videogrpahy), you'll be glad its there ...

Not saying all, but some people who been ragging on the P2 cards not holding enough information are some of the same people who have complained about there being no distribution for HD material.

So, I'd think they would want a tape drive.

Kinda of funny, huh?

I know I'm probably one of few, along with the original poster, who thinks the DV tape drive is superfulous, especially since I'm pretty well covered in that department with my existing gear. I may be the only one, but I was kind of thrilled with the original concept, the "super-8 lookin' HD camera", which sported P2 slots only - not to imply that I'm anywhere less than thrilled with what Panasonic has delivered, er promised to deliver. I just wonder how much cost was added to add the transport, especially when the original estimated price given at the time of the prototype last year was well under $5000, that is, if I remember correctly. Eh, water under the bridge now....

$50-$100, tops. It's so cheap, it made no sense NOT to add one.

It’s doubtful that the costs of any of the components for this camera are what determines the price. Panasonic will raise the price to wherever they think the consumers’ threshold of pain is relative to their competition.

HVX200 = Transition to HD....Hence the DV Tape Transport

Future HVX Models = P2 ONLY......As HD becomes more *standard*.....fewer will need the DV transport. Look for the HVX300 to be tape free.

..who says it jumped that much in price.. all panasonic ever said was that the price would be competitive with the sony HDV cam. any solid price you heard was just a guess. they never released a price and then changed it. right now the sony hvrz1u has a list price of :$5,946.00 U.S. List Price so the HVX list price IS certainly competitive. granted that the list price of the camera does not include a P2 card as far as i know, but we all hope it does .. a 4 GB would be nice so you can use high def out of the box. ..realistically you could use HD out of the box going to a laptop or your NLE.. but .. thats not really practical for most people.
..anyway point is that the price is consistant with what they said it would be all along.
