cowboystudio dumb adapter k mount stuck on a lovely pentax 35-105mm f3.5.

nothing will budge.

no movement at all.

(which is great if the darn thing twisted off!)

i previously had it on a 50mm f1.4 and it twisted off no prob.

i'm sure this has happened to others.

any and all insights would be great.

be well

I have a cheap K mount adapter for my FS100, it has a little spring loaded lever that I need to push backwards (Away from the lens to get the adapter to twist off. Does yours have that and can you fiddle with it to get it to release? This may sound crazy, but my adapter is made of mostly aluminum and then steel around where the lens mounts. Different metals expand, and contract, at different rates in response to different temperatures. You may want to see if there is any differences in the fit at lower temps. Yeah, stick the lens in plastic bag and stick it in the fridge. I have not done this with lenses and adapters but a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away I worked as a Paramedic. We had a piece of equipment (A laryngoscope) that did not have matched blades. The blades would sometimes get stuck on the handles. A partner of mine, a GREAT Paramedic, taught me to throw the thing into the fridge for about an hour, and because of the differences in the metals (Surgical steel handle and aluminum blades), after cooling, there was enough play to get them off. I am not going to say that this might work with your lens and adaptor.. but it beats my next suggestion.... a hack saw and hammer!!!

I have several adapters for different brands of lenses and they all seem to have their own trick for attaching and removing. I would try the temperature change suggestion first. Then I would start looking around for a large pair of channel lock pliers to get some more leverage (wrap the adapters with some rubber mat, etc, to get a better grip)

david and kraut69-

thank you for sharing your insights.

unfortunately, the other dumb adapters i purchased (canon fd, nikon g and minolta) do have the push pin which manages to release the lens from the adapter.

for some reason the cowboystudio brand does not such a mechanism :(

the idea of different temperatures is a good one.

with snow predicted for nyc tomorrow, i'm sure i'll find a way to get the lens + adapter nice and cold!

by the way, will cold have any effect on the pentax lens/glass?

i have a soft spot for this 35-105/3.5.

i've had it for 15+years and i have been very fortunate to grab some decent images using it with several penatx camera bodies.

(i know the world belongs to canon and nikon but i've been a pentax fan since my first film slr)

Well, the thing to watch out about with any gear and cold temps is condensation. This is acute when the gear gets cold and you bring it into a warmer environment. What you have to do is seal the gear up in an air tight container, before you move from cold to warm, and let the gear warm up to room temperature before taking it out of the air tight container. What I usually do is put my gear in sealed plastic bags and leave it to warm up. It is my understanding that relative humidity is also temperature dependent, so the air trapped in the bag, at the relative humidity of the outside cold air, will rise in temperature as the gear warms, but since it is in an airtight container, no additional moisture can be introduced which will cause condensation on the gear. Just being in the cold should not effect the lens, once it warms as described above.

I am not guaranteeing that this will work, but it is worth a try before you have to resort to possibly more forceful methods. Good luck.

I got a dumb adapter for each one of my Leica r lenses. Beats just having one. Many times I have an assistant changing the lenses, and it gets confusing at times....easier to make a semi-permanent adapter on each lens. Especially if you have other types of lenses. :)

kraut69 & richard-

the lens and stuck adapter are securely wrapped and in the deep freeze till tomw morning when i'm hoping the cold could possibly assist the metal in contracting just a wee bit and allow me to remove the mount.

if not, i'd rather buy another k mount dumb adapter than destroy the one stuck on the 35-105/f3.5.

more to come.

be well.
