Dual XLR Cables with Recorder and Camera?

I have a HPX250 right now, and it has 48v phantom power, I am using the NTG-3 Shotgun Mic and also the Audio Technica AT4053-B for Inside and Outside use, I have a Zoom H4n Recorder that I use to record the audio, however I am wondering, could I use some sort of Dual XLR Cable from the boom mic into the HPX250 and Zoom H4n? And also how would that work, would they both be sending out Phantom Power? Or could I configure it to use Phantom Power on one, and not the other that way I save battery? It should also be noted that I am not recording into p2 I am recording to a Ninja 2 and connecting it via a dual male 3.5mm cable via the Headphone Jack in the camera(if there is a better way to do this let me know please)

Thanks Everyone!

Sounds like extra hassle to record dual system when you have XLRs built into the camera (this is what all DSLR shooters pray for). Are the preamps on the HPX250 so bad that even a H4n is a better option (I jest-- mostly)?

I'd just plug the mic into the camera and avoid having to dealing with an extra device while shooting (power, activation, etc.), synching in post, etc.

I agree with Jive. No reason to use the H4n when you already have XLR inputs on your camera. Maybe if you were using a Sound Devices 702 or something, but an H4n really doesn't give you an advantage over the HPX250's built in preamps.

Why are you outputting audio to the Ninja using the headphone jack? Panasonic's headphone outputs are usually noisy, maybe the 250 fixes this. But why have more cables than you have to? Use the HDMI output for the audio, too.

If he has a sound operator, then tethering to the camera wouldn't be necessary. Either go to the camera or go to a recorder. There's really no reason for both unless the recorder is significantly higher quality than the camera's audio circuits.

FWIW, I would not use a 'Y' cable to split the mic to any two devices. If a mic 'has to' be split, a transformer mic splitter would be used. It would get Phantom Pwr. from direct output tap side only.

I would use a mixer that has a 10 pin hirose output as well as two xlr outputs..something like a sound devices 442 does this. The 10 pin hirose connector has two audio sends and an audio return. You would get what is called a breakaway cable that goes from this 10 pin connector to the camera, and there is a stereo mini jack that plugs into the camera's headphone output, and that runs back to the mixer. Then you take the main xlr outputs and run those to your recorder. You can switch monitoring on the mixer between the camera return and your main outputs, or you could just monitor off the recorder. That's the best way to do what you want properly, and tons of people do it this way. I understand recording onto two devices (the camera and a separate audio recorder). This is known as dual system, but the audio recorder should be something of higher quality, like a sound devices 702. The camera audio is usually just for reference and as a guide track for syncing audio later.

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know the camera setting on the HPX250 to send it to the Ninja 2 via HDMI because right now it isn't which is why I had to use the dual male 3.5mm cable?
Thanks!
