Dual wireless lav kit?

Hi guys,

I have a lot of projects where I'd like to have to people talking while walking far away from the camera. I want to be able to feed to wireless lavs into my beachteck. I already own 2 Audio-technica AT831c lavs and I was wondering if there are any wireless kits that support this mic (it's an old model).

As an alternative I thought about getting this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DFWDIDA/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= It's pretty affordable (which at the time is a must) and it should give me exactly what I want.

Any thoughts?

I've never been a fan of VHF audio gear ( UHF sounds so much better ) so I would be very cautious before investing any money in it.

If they are walking away from the camera how much to you see their lips? If not much I would do a take for sound after you get one for picture that you like and cut in the audio.

Better sound, less hassle. Have them deliver the lines both times so you have a sync reference, but if you can't see the lips your sync can be very soft.

If you see their lips a lot then not as good an option.

Don't use VHF wireless mics. They cause interference like crazy, and you randomly get audio full of hiss and crackle, even if you're only a few feet away. Save your money and get either UHF wireless kits (like THIS Sennheiser kit) or digital wireless mics (Like THIS Rode mic)

The least expensive wireless mic system that appears to be any good is the Azden PRO-XD 2.4 Ghz system. The LAV mic that comes with the kit is garbage, so you have to replace the lav to get good sound.

Azden PRO-XD 2.4 GHz Digital Wireless Lavalier System : $198

I would upgrade the LAV mic to the Oscar SoundTech OST-801/802 mics that cost less than $100 US. If money is tight the Azden EX 507XD mic sounds pretty good at $40.

Most of the low budget VHF systems these days are fixed frequency with one of two channels. Aside from not being frequency agile, my old Lectro 185 and 187 VHF systems sounded good, but they were not low cost.

There are several considerations you need to think about.

1. Distance: do you need 100 feet or a 1/4 mile?
2. Congestion: Are there a lot of other wireless devices being used in the area?
3. Durability: How much are you going to use it, does it need to be bullet proof, or just good enough to get by?
4. Reliability: Related, but not the same thing as the previous question. Most cheap gear is fiddly to say the least?
5. Price: Simply how much can you afford? Is it out of your pocket, or your clients' pockets?

The range is from Chinese made wifi units ($100 a set) to the motion picture industry standards (a few thousand dollars a set).

@ Joshua_G: No, I ended up purchasing the Azden ProHD, but the dual transmitter option was what caught my attention, and almost led to a purchase. One review mentioned that the system operates in the 600 MHz zone, and that this might be a concern as US and Canada looking at auctioning off that spectrum...so that was one factor in my decision to go digital with Azden.

+ 1 on Jaime's suggestion. Use your wireless set up on your main talent, so you still can monitor the dialog, the camera/wireless will still pick up the other talent enough for reference audio to sync in post with the clean audio from the recorder.

Thanks for all the very useful input. I already have a nice beachtek pro which I use with 2 wired lav mics, but from time to time I'd like to be able to have actors outside walking from and towards the camera.
This seems to be the least expensive dual UHF system around. There was a lot of nice reviews, with one or 2 bad ones. https://www.amazon.com/Saramonic-96...e=UTF8&qid=1483565153&sr=8-1&keywords=uwmic10

I'll sleep on it for a while :)

The count is 37 positive reviews and 11 negative ones. I'd purchase it only with an option for full refund upon return.

Thanks so much for posting this! I was going to try and battle on ebay for used sennheisers but I would feel better with new equipment. If I am reading the reviews accurately, it has an internal battery, which lasts about 8 hours. Any suggestions for something with a replaceable battery?

Also, this 2.4 GHZ would be fine in most environments? I need these for a shoot in Eastern Europe and I hear interference is bad sometimes.

Azden quality is much improved right?

If the subjects are moving around, that shouldn't cause a problem with signal right? Was just reading some reviews.

Many thanks!
