DSR250 or new models?

Hi, guys/girls!

I'm working in a low budget environment at a local television station and the television station is purchasing some new cameras. One member of the technical crew would like to purchase the DSR-250, but with recent advancements with cameras that are reasonably priced and shoot great picture is this a wise idea?

I have a film background and have been out of the "business" for the last two years and recently there has been all these great new cameras ie. HVX-200, FX-1, FX-7.

So, basically I need some help in this situation. In the meeting today, I expressed my opinion that there may be far better options than the DSR-250.

Would shooting 4:3 with the DSR-250 be better or worse than any other of the "newer cameras" I quoted earlier or that are currently on the market?

Thanks for all the help!!!

I recently sold my DSR 250 and downgraded in size(not quality) to the canon xh-a1 which is on the way. However, I was glad I started video production with the DSR 250. I had a wide angle lens and Century Opitics matte box on the front of it which improved its professional look. I got jobs others did not just because I had a bigger camera. The public still thinks bigger is better. That may or may not be a good thing in your setting. A small camera is better for stealth shots. A big camera may get you the interview over the other news stations or at least make you look as good. The other advantages of the DSR 250 is the ability to have long record times (184min) and professional batteries, professionally placed buttons, Image stabalization, auto or manual everything and don't forget it is a shoulder mount (easier to keep steady for the quick stuff when a tripod is not an option. I think Sony is coming out with a HDV version of the DSR 250. I am not sure when it will be available, but if it comes in around the same price it may help future proof your purchase a little better.

Thanks for the response, Bilgami. I will take that into consideration.

Can one still purchase the DSR300 new? If so, where from?

Interesting resume too! I've also been looking for help lighting for local television ie. news set.

What lights do you recommend and what have you seen most widely used in your 12 years?

no the 300 has been long discontinued im sure you can find one on ebay but sony came out with the 390 and a 500 series and the most recent the 400 series.
