DSLRs 35mm movie equivalent

Hi All,

I have a question regarding focal length and 35mm equivalent. I often shoot commercials in 35mm film or Super 35mm film and therefore used to 35mm movie camera focal lengths. I intend to buy a GH2 to shoot with, but also to use as a director’s viewfinder. Everywhere on the web for DSLRs such as the GH2, the 35mm equivalent is always indicated for the lens, but I believe they’re talking about the 35mm still equivalent, not the 35mm movie camera equivalent, am I right? If so, how does one find the 35mm movie equivalent for a given lens?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Best
Jeremy

the focal lenght on the lens doesn't change when you use it with a different camera

what changes is the field of view, which depends on the focal lenght of the lens (fixed) and the size of the sensor

APS-C and 35mm motion film are "1.6x crop" compared with full-frame or stills film (or vistavision), while the GH2 is "1.9x crop" in video mode, and "2x crop" in stills mode

in relation to 35mm motion film, the GH2 in video mode is 1.2x crop (=1.9/1.6)

therefore, if you're using a GH2 and want to get the same FoV that a 30mm lens delivers on motion film, you want a 25mm lens: just divide by 1.2

if you want to do the math the other way around, the 35mm movie film equivalent of a 25mm on a GH2 is a 30mm: multiply by 1.2
