DSLR Shooting Slot Cars

Starting my foray into the DSLR realm at present I have a Canon 1100D body with a range of gear and lenses (Canon 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200)

I am using the 1100D as my entry and well I was given it for free. Plan is to work out some basics and await the elusive 5D Mark III or save the cash for a C300.

My question is I am about to shoot a slot car racing event tomorrow night and thought I would throw it out there as to any ideas or tips as to how best capture this kind of movement and colour using a DSLR.

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

The final video will go up on www.videoontheroad.com hopefully in the next week.

Cheers.

I would seriously think about shooting at 30P with a fast shutter speed.

I'd opt for a faster shutter over a lower ISO, for sure.

Cheers Chris.

How about slow mo? I don't have as much flexibility with the 1100D with frame rates etc. But any thoughts on getting best results?

Thanks again and much appreciated.

Alot of the action is in the pits. Add closeups of their facial expressions when racing and of their hands on the controllers. A newer video cam like the TM900 with 1080-60p could add some nice auto focus and much better depth of field for some of those long straight-a-way shots.

Telling the story of the characters involved and why they're into it is orders of magnitude more interesting than the racing and the results.

Nice first go for sure though!

Cheers,
Pete

I like the editing.
I like how you showed the cars lined up at the start of the race.
I like the lower angles which put the viewers in the action.

I would like to see some slow motion of the crashes [if possible].
I would like to see the faces of the guys / girls doing the racing [show their emotions in a shot or two. Maybe some sweat on a forehead or a closeup of a hand gripping the controller].
I would like to see one car crossing the “finish line” at the end so it would give the feel of a complete race in less than a minute.

Not bad overall however.

Are you doing this for a documentary or a commercial for the shop?

This was really a camera test as I have not shot on a DSLR previous to this.

Thinking about going back on Wednesday night for another go. I now have a Swivi LCD screen which helps a lot in regards to focus.

If I do go I will try to wire up one or two of the guys and concentrate a little more on the people as opposed to the cars.

Will put it up here if I get there.

Thanks again.
