Dslr Rig = Need Advice

if all you want is a shoulder mount. no follow focus, mattebox, etc. id look into this:

ss-302 w handles:

the cool thing with this is its a good base system. you can always bolt a baseplate and rials onto the QR plate if need be.
i have their original cb105 and there is no better "no-nonsense" piece of gear out there. it doesnt try to be anything more than it claims to be. i drilled some holes in it and have often bolted my zacuto baseplate and rails to it.

Have you checked out indisystem or CPMFilmtools?
I'm not an owner of either, but I've heard only good things about CPM, who also is a member here at DVXuser. I've heard mixed reviews on indisystem. Search around here or elsewhere online for reviews of these two companies to help make a better decision. Just puttin' out two names that have products in your price range.

I would say that the Gini rig is in fact perfect. I have one that I bought for about $400 (including shipping) and it had more than enough parts to easily re-configure to match the rig in the link you provided.

If you monitor their ebay page you can get one of those he lists at a lower price. In addition, many come with a follow focus that, along with any spare parts you don't need, you can re-sell, thereby lowering the net price of the rig you've redesigned from your pool of parts.

There is one thing you need to know about the seller of Gini rigs: he refuses to communicate in English. You just have to bid on the item based on the pictures. Also, once you've bid the lowest amount possible, he frequently closes the auction with you as the winner, so you don't have to use the Buy It Now price.

The gini rigs that are available on ebay are an absolute steal for what they cost. The quality rivals that of Zacuto for significantly less. Zacuto gear is a bit more thoughtfully designed, but the gini stuff is extremely modular, of very high quality, and dirt cheap for what you get.

Trusmt also makes some gear that is much better than what it costs. Chinese manufacturing is improving at an incredible rate, and there are some killer deals to be had if you're willing to go with lesser known brands.

Gini rigs are the best rigs for the price. Nothing is comparable at that price point. I've heard really good things about their new ifollow focus as well.

Gini's stuff is incredibly made.

He has a lot of stuff on Gini-Rigs

I've got the Express35 Run-N-Gun Trio. Had it for a couple of weeks and so far so good. Very modular - can go from ENG style shoulder mount to minimal and everywhere in between. Made in USA if that's important to you.

i mentioned in another thread the value of a monopod with a head relative to a shoulder rig for a basic dslr setup

I know about the Gini Rigs, but those are too crazy for me.

Honestly, I don't know how it can be too crazy for you, IMHO. Personally I have a well decked out Redrock Micro rig, full to the gears with everything, and I personally think the Gini is just the best way to go, especially with price being a concern. Plus the Extreme 17 will include anything you could ever need in building a rig for almost any camera. Pound for pound, Gini is the way I'd go and if I knew I could could get at least 75% back for my Redrock stuff, I'd sell it and scope up a Gini. I don't know what it is but I had to convince my friend of the Gini too which makes no sense. Suffice it to say that he's absolutely greatful I convinced him.

I can't recommend it enough man.

I own a gini rig and am truly blown away by the quality. I have shot with quite a few rigs from some reputable companies and the gini has been the best by far, as stated already very modular and machining is excellent. I had my eye on a Zacuto rig but just couldn't justify the $$, these are very close in quality. Needless to say I'm very happy with mine.

I'm looking for a basic dslr rig similar to this one by RedRock

Problem is, that's out of my budget. I'm looking to spend no more than $300-$400 if possible and want something basic. I know about the Gini Rigs, but those are too crazy for me.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Check this rig out. Im in the process of putting it together: http://www.pushprocessed.com/2012/08/putting-together-right-dslr-shoulder-rig.html

I put one together for 500 bucks including mattebox. Take a look here: http://www.pushprocessed.com/2012/08/putting-together-right-dslr-shoulder-rig.html

It's decent quality and very affordable. Its modular, so i can use sticks or go shoulder.

DSLR cinema rig: affordable mattebox

DSLR cinema rig: affordable mattebox

hey do you have any other comments on that Matte Box? I haven't been able to find any reviews on it anywhere.

For that price-cant beat it. Its not Arri quality, but its still good build. It has 2 4x4 filter trays, one is rotating. It comes with 3 rubber rings. Now, its not a swing-away. It can be adjusted vertically though. I used to have RedRock mattebox. But it was too big for dslr rigs IMHO. This mattebox is perfect size; has the pro features, comes with french flag + barn doors, and costs 150-200 bucks. Im happy with it! It does work. Its built pretty good as well.

does the height adjustment bracket get in the way? i mean the portion that stays beneath the rods, it looks like an overly large portion of it stays down there unused.

For my setup its good. The height adjustment bracket only sticks out on the bottom about 2 inches. No problem there. I jave a D4 which has a vertical grip, so the camera sits higher on the rails than a camera without vertical grip.

Bottom line: the vertical adjustment bracket does not get in the way for my setup.

thanks, i'll look into it, it has a very atractive price and i've looking for lightweight matte boxes

I have used edelkrone, gini, and redrock. EDELKRONE is the best by far. Their gear is miles ahead, but at a price. Get a gini rig, sell off the parts you dont need, and build a rig out of the parts you want.
