FS5: DSLR options for FS5 B camera.

I have an FS5 and am looking to get a dslr / stills camera for potentially some B cam work for interviews etc. I'm not a photographer and never will be, but I'd like to have a dslr option to be able to take nice pictures when out and about for family things etc.

For B camera work, full HD would be fine and not looking to get into 4k as I have the FS5 already as my main work camera.

Lense wise I have the Sony FS5 kit lens 18-105. But I'm mainly using the sigma 24-105 with metabones on the FS5 and I have a canon 70-200. So I could opt for a sony or canon body only and still have enough lenses to go around (just about).

My budget is about £300-£400. I was looking at the Canon 700D which fits into that (about £350 with a current £40 cashback offer). But am open to suggestions based on peoples experience with perhaps matching the FS5 with other cameras in this price range.

Thanks in advance guys for any advice.

i'm certainly not opposed to second hand. The A6000 has popped up on my radar, people have good things to say about it for video then?

Yeah, just make sure you switch it to XAVC instead of AVCHD, you
get a higher bitrate/better codec. Video looks good from the A6000,
I'm finishing a video promo right now shot with a Sony FS700 and the
A6000 as B-cam. Plus they are cheap and can use the same lenses and
adapters as the FS5. If you can stretch things a little, the A6300 will
give you everything the A6000 can, along with 4k as a bonus.

I actually got the A6000 for $398 on a Black Friday special last November.
Amazing how little it costs to get a camera so capable these days. I was mainly
using it for fun..... family and landscape stills and so on along with some timelapses
for work. But the XAVC video out of it is really quite good and I'm now using
it all the time for work projects, If you throw your 18-105 on it, the continuous autofocus
is pretty nice!

A6000 is a mess for video. It looks over sharpened, it has the worst aliasing I have ever seen on a Sony camera, the colours are wonky, it has no cinegammas and the audio options are really poor.

To be honest I'd say the same for the FS5 too, so it's all relative. If you have £300 then you're not going to be expecting miracles but it can certainly do a job.

Yes for video it'll never be the A cam, I'll also not need to use any audio input from it as that'll all be covered from the fs5. I really don't have any budget to go higher. It's for a family good quality stills cam which I can also use for certain video projects.

If you'd be interested in lightly used A7s and you're in the USA, please make me an offer. Mine just sits in the box and it's time to let it find a new home.

Thanks Doug for the offer but I'm in the UK. Also my budget just isn't there to make a fair offer on an a7s.

So I just picked up a fantastic deal on an a6000. New here in the UK with the kit lens it's approx £500. I picked up a second hand kit for £370. However, it was sent out as a replacement for someone by Sony, but the guy had already bought a new camera. It was opened, looked at for 5 minutes, then sold on to the dealer I bought it from. So it's effectively new, for £130 off! I love a bargain.

Planning on keeping it for now as the go to stills lens for it. Until I can afford a better compact lens anyway.
