DSLR Feature Film - Searching for Sonny Teaser on 5dM2

I shot this last weekend with the 5dM2. Love the camera even though there were definitely lots of work arounds with exposure. We didn't have too many issues with the rolling shutter or jelly effect. There were some shots where the clip dropped frames.

We're releasing the full trailer on April 15th at http://searchingforsonny.com

Equipment used
- Nikon lenses, most of the shots here are 50mm.
- Kino Gaffer Kit
- Arri Package, 1K, 650, and an inky
- Doorway dolly with two sets of 8 foot track
- One 4x4 frame with opal
- One 4x4 Black Flag
- One 3X2 Black Flack

Here's an .mp4 of the teaser

Love to hear any critiques. DSLR is the future of indie cinema

By the way, I don't think you're the first feature. Google Nikon D90 feature. If Iremember right there are two already.

Don't play up that angle, it'll just bite you in the ass.

Morgan,

Here's a picture of how we pulled focus. We retrofitted our redrock mount and rods we usually use for our hvx to the 5dm2.

I've attached a jpg to the post. Check out the set up.

Looks very high value.

Love the coordination and choreography!

It has a very gay vibe for some reason.

Don't know why and that certainly isn't a bad thing just how it hit me on first blush.

I would most definitely want to see the whole thing based on this teaser trailer.

Im glad to see it was not just a humbling effort with the camera operator holding the lens !

Do you find the FF properly smooth - no backlash problems etc ?

BTW are you stressing about 30FPS ?

S

Me likes! The shot of 'gary' was especially nicely lit... nice mellow filmic look.

Just make sure to conform to 24p and CRUSH the sound mix/vocal recording (meaning make it incredible)

Morgan,

The FF was really smooth actually. We were very surprised at how well it work. The only thing that was a pain, is that we didn't have a monitor. I guess the 5dm2 has a hmdi mini plug? We just though any hdmi cable would work, but that wasn't the case. We also hated that even when we did hook up the camera to a monitor via component cable, the operator couldn't look at the screen on the camera. So we had to just make a TON of marks for each shot and shoot it over and over again.

I'm too stresssed out about the 30fps... just waiting eagerly for the Panasonic GH1 to fix all my DSLR foibles.

You mean how it's been done for decades? No way... hee hee

How long does the feature top out at? What was the budget

Nice looking stuff. I don't think you should advertise on the official movie site that it's done on a DSLR. Let people think what they want before giving away that it's done on less expensive or untested equipment. Also, I think Zach Forsman actually has the claim to the first feature film done on a DSLR (D90) with Eloquent Graffiti. Once again, however, he does not go around advertising this point that it is all done on a DSLR.

Who cares what anyone claims as long as the **** looks good. Neither may be the first if someone finishes production before them... And why not advertise what it was done on? Its inspirational and a snub at the equipment snobs who sit around needing various pieces of equipment to complete a project. Don't be petty.
