Just get a cheap couple hundred dollar mini dv cam. Any will work fine for use as a capture deck. Most people will recommend that you do that, and save the heads on your camera for actual recording of footage.

Just as an aside, has anyone ever actually had their camera mucked up from mixing wet and dry lube tapes? Snopes please. I'd find it hilarious if this were all just an internet legend that propagated from video site to video site. Okay not hilarious -but perhaps mildly amusing since I just turned down a job because the potential client handed me 15 sony tapes from which to find 4 minutes worth of footage for a corporate thing.

Wet Dry???

Wet Dry???

Quick Question...

Which tapes are dry, which are wet?

I use JVC when i buy but most production companys send me panasonics, i've run both for a while now with no problems. The Sony's (Red and black dont know model, think it said premium on it) seemed to destroy my old camera so i stay clear of them, is there a list of which tapes work fine together?

Thanks

The MCOM department at my university uses ten DVX100Bs. Within the first month of use, all of the heads had to be professionally cleaned due do a lack of tape continunity (or so that's what we were told by the repair center). The department head selected a tape and required all students to use ONLY that tape, and things have been fine since (that's been a year now).

Yes, on my previous cameras (vx1000 and TRV900) i used sony premiums and captured with a smaller 1CCD camera however one day i was given around 10 TDKs so i used them and all the shots came out glitchy and horrible. I doubt it will hurt your heads to use a diffrent brand for maybe like 1 shoot , just dont do it constantly.

I don't know of which type JVC are, but Sony are wet and Panny are dry.

It happened to me, I borrowed my friend's sony to log&capture on and after 3 tapes I got "venetian blinds". he only used sony wet tapes in it, my dry tapes quickly mucked it up.

ETA: I don't think it "damages" anything, it just mucks up the heads enough to require them to be cleaned before the cam can be used again.
