DRS Effect

Dynamic Range Stretch adjusts the sensor's Knee setting. You should certainly use it for bright outdoor scenes where you need detail in both the sky and in the shadows. I believe the DRS function is designed for this purpose, though at the cost of additional sensor noise; however, I find DVX200's noise patterns quite pleasing. If you intend to use DRS quite a lot, I suggest you assign it a user switch.

Why not shoot Vlog instead?

DRS is probably intended as a quick fix for a backlit subject when recording to any of the video scenes for quick turnaround. In those cases, you simply need the footage to work without post processing...such as news gathering. You can't shoot ENG in vlog. But, if you have an interview subject against a sky and it's being blown out in favor of a proper exposure on your interview subject then activating the DRS effect will act like a graded vlog. Obviously, you can't use DRS in vlog-L, but with DRS you can get a graded vlog look in broadcast legal footage ready to air.
