Dropping Frames in Playback all the sudden

I have FCP hooked up to my 320GB external harddrive, I took it to a friends house to put something on it and when I got back to work on my videos the "Dropped Frames" comes up literallt 3sec after pressing play. I've tried messing with settings. I have no idea what happened, but it pissed me off and I dont know how to fix it!

Also when I capture footage (this was before the unplug of the harddrive) it cuts off like the last 30sec of audio to the video! So weird!

Can come someone help? I really wanna finish my projects, and need to play them back w/o getting stopped! Thanks!

Could you detailed what it is that you put on it at your friend's house?

Also, what brand of external. FW or USB or eSATA.

What version of FCP? What computer and RAM.

What cam are you capturing with and what interface? What sequence settings.

OS and QT versions?

And would you explain what you did when you were "messing with the settings." What settings?

My friend put Photoshop on it, I have a WD external harddrive it is USB and eSata but its connected with USB. I have FCP 5.1.4. Using DVX100B capturing in DVNTSC- 24 I have Mac OS G4 with no harddrive left thats why i set FCP up to my external, I have 2GB Ram.

I went into settings made sure RT unlimited was off, and dropped playback frames or quality down to see if that helped. Nothing has helped.

If you are using a USB media drive, there is a likelihood that you will consistently drop frames. USB drives cannot sustain the consistent throughput needed for video.

How do you put Photoshop on an external drive?
