Dropped Frames? PLEASE HELP

My sister was on vacation for a week at my house so I filmed a full tape of her and me while she was visiting. Anyhow... when I go to upload my video via firewire cable to my computer, I get HUNDREDS of dropped frames! My camera heads aren't dirty. I use a DVX-100B to capture my footage and a brand new Cannon ZR800 to upload it to my computer so I won't wear out the heads in my DVX.

So at first I figured it was a bad tape, but I can't upload ANY of my previous video clips without loosing a TON of frames.

Then I figured I didn't have enough space on my hard drive, so I cleaned up 110 gb of free space for the video capture. I ran a Disc Derangement & Disc Clean-Up with no positive results...

I also tried turning off the video preview screen in Sony Vegas 7 (So not to use more memory than necessary.) and unplugging my internet cable so nothing else was going on in the background using up memory. I closed all programs except the video capture program but that didn't help either...

If anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong I would really appreciate it!

This is the computer I'm using:

Dell Dimension DM061
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6400 @ 2.13GHz
2.13GHz, 4.00 GB of RAM

I've never had this problem before. PLEASE HELP:thumbup:

I forgot to mention that I'm using, Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes. From what I heard on the forum they're the best tapes out there for my DVX.

Go ahead and try it again, but use your DVX to digitize.

If it works, that will tell you that there is a (potential) problem with your Canon.

A few years back I was doing the same thing by using a cheaper camera to digitize and after the camera heated-up I started getting dropped frames. If I let it cool down for a while it would work fine again.

I don't know if that's what is happening to you or not but it can't hurt to try :)

1. It might be the camera you are using for capture.
2. Whatever capture device you use - PLUG IT IN! Do not use its battery for power. I have had this problem on 3 different cameras if they are running on battery power during capture.

I had problems slightly differently in that capturing tapes recorded on a sony camcorder from my dvx would constantly drop frames though not visible on the tape., but using a sony camera it went in fine, . so maybe different brands are the problem?

Could be the azimuth is not set properly for one or the other units.
This is, basically, the adjustment for the scanning head to track in the exact same path as the recorded material.
If out a micron or two- it can cause a bad 'read' - ie; dropouts.

Best bet is to see if you get them when digitizing from the original recording device.
PB on the DVX, and grab a segment of footage on the subject tape.
If you get it, sans dropouts, then your other machine is in need of adjustment.
That is- if the azimuth thing is the issue.

good luck.
report back if you have any success. please.

NoNoob, I am having the same drop Frame issue. I am using a HVX200, the footage was shot on tape. All tapes that was use are giving me drop frame issues, some of the material was shot on a different camera. Please help. Is it a problem with my camera?

Are you capturing to the same drive Vegas is installed on? (Usually this is drive C: ) If so, capture to a different hard drive -- not just another partition on the same physical drive.

Have you captured successfully to the SAME hard drive via the SAME cable and camera before?

Are you by any chance trying to capture to a drive that runs at 5400rpm? Video capture generally requires the data drive be 7200rpm or faster.

Are you capturing to an internal or external hard drive? If external, how is it connected?

Have you stopped all other applications before attempting to capture? Antivirus and anti-spyware programs especially.

Has anything changed on your system -- either hardware or software -- since the last time you were able to capture without dropping frames?

I've had a similar issue with a Canon GL2. Was dropping frames on capture like mad. Apparently some Canon's don't like to share firewire buses. When I tried capturing via firewire to a FW800 external hard drive (both sharing a bus) it was dropping frames but when I changed my capture drive to a USB2 external it worked fine.

Maybe this helps.
