Dropped Camera - Broke LCD Screen

I dropped my DVX 100A from about 2ft and it hit on the folded out screen - it's trashed.

I got a price of $600+ from Panasonic just for the part.

Can anyone tell me a better source for a new screen and if the repair can be done by a fairly technically competant person like myself?

Thanks

Personally, if it is going to cost more than $600 to fix it, I would just get a nice 7in widescreen LCD monitor and mount it to the acc. shoe. you would save money and get a better LCD.

Hi - thanks for the response. The image is almost like shattered glass. The screen is still attached with no physical evidence of damage. I did think about buying a larger, cheaper LCD screen but I'd like to restore the camera to it's original functionality.

dropped my friends VX-100, looking at the same problem - $800 total repair quoted.
In this case, the backlight is off, but the image appears to be perfectly fine. Repair shop says that it is an IC problem and entire module is only solution.
Unfortunately, there is little time or choice in alternative solutions.
Unless someone has a broken camera that they will sell for parts, or part-out?

I wonder if a lesser Panasonic model uses the same screen - like a sub $1K camera. Buying one of those used would be the better way to go perhaps. I can't believe that there is no replacement screen out there for far less than $600. Some where someone knows the answer to this....

Any advice on a screen and mount would be appreciated. It will be tough to sell this camera with a broken screen though. Thanks...

Here is a good sharp screen and mount kit with battery:

As far as repair, just be thankful you don't have a Sony Z1U. A customer of mine broke his and it cost $2172 at the Sony Factory.

If you need a place for fair repair quotes on Panny, we send all our cameras to these guys, who Panasonic on Cahuenga in LA (DVCPRO factory repair)recommended as being only one of 4 places in the whole country authorized to work on the DVX100 series:

sorry to hear that. a similar thing happened to me last year; an absent-minded audio guy was wired into the camera, and while we were on break he practiced a 20-foot move with 10 feet of xlr, pulling my brand new dvx100a off of a dolly and smack into a floor.

this was at ohio university in southern ohio, and i had to ship my dvx to illinois (the closest repair center). it cost me about $900 in total (including shipping) for the repair, as something else was shattered inside. i was dvx-less for maybe 7 weeks.

i understand your wanting to restore functionality. this was how my situation turned out, so hopefully you see what the repair it option looks like. best of luck & regrets on your damage.

Thank you very much for the info. I'm torn between putting any more money into the camera vs upgrading to a newer camera. I think the DVX100 would be easier to sell if it were 100% working. At least I could take the LCD with me and sell the camera as is.
